yeah, I've never bought that either... Spinks was obviously very frightened, but he took a legitimate asswhupping

It is true though that after Ruiz-Holy I and II there wasn't any outcry about them being bad fights. Instead the were talked about as close, hard-fought (though not great) battles for the second place n the division behind Lewis. Also, Holyfield's fights at that stage included about as much clinching as Ruiz' (Tyson I, Bean etc)

Tyson doesn't get nearly enough flack for his clinching.

That BULLSHIT's Been Thrown Against the Fightbeat Wall a Time or 2...

But Even Prior to the Deathblow, Tyson Landed a FLUSH Uppercut, then the Bodyshot which FORCED Spinks Down the 1st Time...In Most Fight Reports it Merely Says "Tyson Drops Spinks w/a Bodyshot", to Explain the Knockdown, but the Uppercut was the MORE Damagin Blow, in REED's Opinion...

Mike's Finishing Touch Actually LIFTED Spinks Off his Feet & HURLED him Backwards...Tyson-Spinks was Brief, yet LEGIT...

Agreed, the first two Ruiz-Holy fights were in fact pretty decent hw fights. If it were to happen in this time of hw mediocrity, they would probably be the hw fight of the year

Another one that is remembered wrongly is Haye-Valuev. Pretty much everytime it's talked about, it's all about Haye outpointing easily Valuev before nearly knocking him out at the end. In fact, the fight was a borefest that Haye was really lucky to win. He didn't do anything for much of the fight and lost on my card.

Agreed. It was a beautiful move by Mike also. He slipped Spinks right hand, and countered back with his own all in one motion. Perfect display of the rare mix of reflexes, speed, and power that Mike had.

I don't think I have ever heard the wrong description of Haye-Valuev you mentioned (maybe that happens in Britain) but I totally agree about the fight, IMO Haye could and perhaps should have lost it but there were about seven rounds that couldn't be scored since neither did anything. Valuev-Ruiz II was surprisingly good fight btw

There's no way Spinks took a dive. He was just crushed by a much better heavy. It was a case of a great heavy against a great light-heavy who wasn't remotely the same fighter at heavy. It wasn't a big surprise that Tyson KOed him quickly.

Good shout on Haye-Valuev. Haye did fuck all in that fight, I thought he lost, as did the commentators at the time.

To add to the Tyson-Spinks discussion, I wanna say KO Magazine had them both in the top 5 P4P. I know Tyson was ranked #1, I'm not sure where Spinks ranked. In addition, that fight was on a Monday. Imagine Floyd fighting Martinez on a weekday, lol

No, but you did have Tuesday night fights on USA. Sunday night cards on Foxsports. Jones vs Montell 2 was on a Thursday.

I don't think boxing has ever tried to take on Monday night football. What would have been a lot more common was the Saturday and Sunday afternoon fights on regular tv, but by the 90's, those were more brought in to sucker boxing fans into watching luge or brick throwing or ultra marathons while they waited for the boxing to be televised. Without DVR's and with VCR's being a pain in the ass, they really had boxing fans by the nuts back then.

I remember some of the big PPV fights in the early 90s (mainly 1991) being on weekdays

If REED Isn't Mistaken, Hagler-Hearns AND Leonard-Hagler were on Mondays...Weekends SEEM to Be a NATURAL Fit for Boxing, but it Wasn't Always that Way...

Tried to edit because I remember there being some Great Western Forum shows that I think were on Monday nights.

But, I can't imagine that any ppv cards ever took on Monday Night Football?

Sometimes, people remember fights wrong. Sometimes, people remember fights correctly. It is not wrong to remember fights wrong, but it's wrong to not remember fights at all.

Often people seem to credit Teddy Atlas for inspiring Moorer in the first Holyfield fight. If he did, it must have taken a few rounds to kick in, because Moorer fought the same damn way in the rounds after Atlas yelled at him.
