I used to get excited about UFC events but it seems over saturated with events that are not overly meaningful or worthwhile. Hard to get even casual fan friends up for an event. Lawler vs Hendricks was an exception to this trend. What do you guys think? Has Dana and the boys went a little too far on expanding their market?
I still like MMA but quite a bit less than I used too. Nowaday, boxing is firmly in the driver's seat when it comes to my watching preference when it used to be 50-50 or maybe even a slight advantage to MMA. More and more, the cards are lack depth and too much fighters are sold by their personnality instead of their performance.
Nothing has changed. They are both great sports with the same flaws and strengths that they've always had. The exception, as you point out, is that UFC has made their events less of 'events' by increasing the number of them. No big deal. It was a natural and predictable evolution.
We have had some great fights this year so far. And even greater ones to come. Weidman vs. Machida should be great. Rousey is about to fight 3 times in 7 months. Jones vs. teixeira coming up will be good, Werdum vs Browne & Tate vs. Carmouche coming up next week should be interesting. Barao vs. Dilashaw, Munoz vs. Mousasi, Davis vs. Johnson, Lawler vs. Ellenberger. It's a pretty exciting time.
Why WOULDN'T MMA Still Interest People Anymore???... No, Every Fight or Card WON'T Be Great, but a Good Fight or Card is Just Around the Corner...Bones Jones Fights in 2 Weeks, Rousey's MUST-SEE T.V. & Other Stars will Eventually EMERGE in the Post-Anderson Silva/GSP Era.... REED:mj:
Yep... The "Honeymoon" Phase is Over...MMA Isn't a Novelty Anymore & that's a GOOD Thing...The Sport is SETTLING IN & There will Be Peaks & Valley's, just like there is in Boxing... REED:mj:
Honestly, the UFC's FightPass bullshit is killing a big part of what I liked about the UFC. The UFC is also probably lacking a couple of additionally big draws right now. The GSP and Silva void is bigger because Cain and Jones have been on the shelf. They can only milk Rousey so much. She'll be fighting for the 3rd time in 6 months in July. I think burnout is a bigger threat to Ronda than any 135 pound female. But my interest hasn't diminished. Hell, the Bellator card this week was amazing. There were 3 or 4 great finishes including Volkov head kicking Mighty Mo into nap time. That being said, it's never been a "boxing or MMA" choice for me. Just like being a fan of the NFL doesn't impact my interest in the NBA.
THIS... Boxers Respect MMAists and Vice Versa, but in Terms of FANS, REED Has Yet to Meet Somebody that Can Watch Both Sports EQUALLY, the Way he Does...When REED's in Boxing Circles, he Finds Himself DEFENDING MMA & The Same Thing Applies when REED's in MMA Circles... It's SAD, Really... REED:mj:
to be honest, MMA lost a lot of his appeal when Pride closed down. The no 4 points attacks rule of the UFC kills a big part of the fun for me. But it's not just that, more and more, the care are diluted, adding WMMA bouts makes it even worse for me (as I simply don't care about it, save for the rare exception). Plus, as I said earlier, it seems that too much fighter are sold by their personality instead of their performance. That the UFC encourage their fighter to get into Twitter Beef also make the sport look phony to me. More and more WWE like. Still, I do watch a lot of MMA and enjoy it. Just not as much as I used to. Where it was probably my n.1 sport, it's now either my n.2 or even n.3 (hockey my have taken it over for me).
What do you mean? I actually enjoy the FightPass because it allows the UFC to expand and do it's global thing and have a huge roster and whatever without majorly devaluing the PPVs. The worst time in MMA was the 2012 into 2013 flux era where they were running awful PPVs where guys like (Wanderlei) Silva vs Franklin II. Now with the FOX(FS1 and FS2) deals fully fleshed out and Fight Pass it is easy to just skip the garbage events and just pay attention to the big meaningful fights. No reason to get "burned out"...if you don't fascinated by an event like Nog-Nelson don't watch it....most fights are intentionally irrelevant. The UFC will continue to run these though because they sell Fight Pass and because they do pretty good gates. Gustaffson-Manuwa did like a 2 million dollar gate...that's lovely for the UFC on a card where no one is getting paid big money. The PPVs being of high quality is all that matters now. UFC 172 looks worth watching. Jones is fighting a dangerous opponent his first fight back from the grueling Gustaffson fight. CO main is slightly weak but boring or not Phil Davis has proved it in the cage with wins over Gustaffson and Machida and fairly dominant wins against the rest...Anthony Johnson is technically unranked but on paper should be a viable contender. Green vs Miller is a division relevant action fight, ditto for Boetsch vs Rockhold and Andre Fili looks like a future contender and gets a solid test in Max Holloway.
Pride was Already Gone by the Time REED Started Watching MMA...Not Sure HOW that Would've Affected REED's MMA Fandom, if @ All... REED's Seen Some Old Pride Footage, but MMA just Seems WEIRD to REED, in a Boxing Ring...Although, the Cage is HARDER on the In House Viewing Audience.... REED:mj:
I think you missed my point. I liked the cards in between PPV's to be on free TV. Perfect example: Nog-Nelson would have been an FS1 broadcast. Now they want a subscription to watch this type of event? No thanks. I think it sucks.
I bought fight pass a few months ago and it seems okay I like watching the old events and I do like watching events a day after if I can't watch them live. I just haven't felt the same excitement and emotion about big fights and events. Maybe I'm old school and used to the anticipation of a big fight once a month or so. I canceled cable so I don't really watch boxing on tv anymore
It's just a matter of UFC over saturating the market. UFC's used to be an event that you looked forward to. Now they throw so many cards at you that you can't keep track of who is fighting and when. And because of it, the cards are becoming weaker and weaker. I've probably ordered less PPV's in the past 2 years than I did any other calender year going back to when my cable black box stopped working. There's still a ton of great fights happening, it's just that there's a lot more filler in between then there used to be. Another part of why casual MMA fans may be going soft on the sport is because we're in a transition period, where the dominant players are changing, much like they did in the days when Liddell, Couture, Hughes, Franklin, etc began to get phased out. And fuck fightpass. If they did it like the WWE channel where you got to see the PPV's, I'd order it in a second. But to pay to watch a bunch of fights barely worthy of free TV, fuck that. TFK
Three cards in the last 40 days? I may count wrong, but that doesn't seem like a few. Does it? They aren't stacked cards but they've involved a ton of fighters I have interest in watching.
I agree. More stacked cards, less cards in Brazil that are meaningless. I guess Im turning into a casual fan myself as I have less time to focus on the sport so much
It's all good man. Just watch and enjoy what you can. I love my wife to death, but i dont agree with her all the damn time. Hell sometimes i dont even like her.
