The Ring had this list back in 2003, their criteria was not necessarily based on who hit the hardest, but also took into account other factors such as accuracy, timing, combos, etc...

For each fighter, they listed things such as:

    Best Punch
    Greatest Knockout
    Man He Couldn't Knockout
    When the Punch Wasn't Enough
Beyond the Punch (overall skills and weaknesses).

This was 10 years ago. If you were to make some changes, who would you add and how would you list the above categories?

    Such as this:

    Manny Pacquiao

    Best Punch: Straight Left
    Greatest Knockout: Ricky Hatton
Man He Couldn't Knockout: Juan Manuel Marquez
When the Punch Wasn't Enough: Erik Morales 1
Beyond the Punch: Super fast of hand and foot, great combos and flurries, unpredictable angles, not the best ring cutter, improved his right hand as his career progressed.

    Diego Corrales:

    Best Punch: Left Hook
Greatest Knockout: Jose Luis Castillo 1
Man He Couldn't Knockout: Joel Casamayor
When the Punch Wasn't Enough: Floyd Mayweather
Beyond the Punch: Terrific infighter, knew how to shorten punches, quick hands on the inside, slow feet, average chin, great heart/resilence.

    Wladimir Klitschko:

    Best Punch: Straight Right
Greatest Knockout: Calvin Brock? Chris Byrd 2?
Man He Couldn't Knockout: Ross Purrity
When the Punch Wasn't Enough: Lamon Brewster 1
Beyond the Punch: Great size, judges distance well, quick hands for his size, great jab, good left hook, adapted his style to make up for his shaky chin, cautious fighter, prone to clinching.

I supposed picking the man he couldn't KO and when the punch wasn't enough can often be interchangable.

I don't know where I'd rank these guys on the top 100, but they'd be on there.

I have that somewhere... it was a fun issue... I thought some of the selections were odd, as well as the order... The way it was presented was cool though, enjoyable read

of all the things on that list, THAT's the one you find most troubling? They were both amazing punchers, end of story

So you think he might deserve a place even higher than in the first five?

    Sure.

Was this list about who was the hardest hitter P4P? That would explain why Wilde is so high on there. One of the categories was "Beyond the Punch", where they talk about what skills they had besides power.

Any chance you could post the criteria they were judging on Erratic? Did they go into any detail on it? The list seems pretty random.

I can't help but think how often they fought in a puchers ring should be one of the criteria.

Yeah but the earlier guys fought in a time where fights were less likely to be stopped which affects numbers... Add to that the lower weight guys fighting a lot of contenders over and over without much flotsam to pad the record and you get lower numbers of KOs

Shavers would have to be near the top if talking just pure power I think in my mind.

I liked Tex Cobb's quote. I think it was something along the lines of "Nobody hits harder than Ernie Shavers. If anybody did I would shoot them"

    Another opponent on Shavers:

Ron Lyle: "Hey man,T hat's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life. And George Foreman could punch ,but none of them could hit like Earnie Shavers did. When he hit you, the lights went out. I can laugh about it now, but at the time, it wasn't funny"

I assume Lyle is telling the truth about it not being funny at the time. :l3:

I'm not so sure. If we are to accept the criteria, I don't know how there could be 19 spots between him and Arguello.

Lyle beat Shavers though. Fighters always seem to pick fighters they beat as hitting harder or being better than guys who knocked them out

Very true. The tales of Shavers' power are shared among a lot of high profile opponents, but I do wonder how much different those accounts would be had those same people been knocked out rather than victorious.

That works both ways though. Maybe if Lyle had less padding in his gloves, he would have knocked Foreman out and Foreman has one less KO on his ledger.. Maybe Nigel Benn hit hard enough to put McClellan in a wheelchair, but if Gerald had a pro wrap his hands, maybe Benn would be sipping porridge through a straw. And Jimmy Wilde probably stops Tommy Morrisson.

Foreman had Cooney and Frazier down as two of the three hardest guys he ever encountered. He beat both of them.

The other one....was Cleveland Williams, whom he didn't even fight, TTBOMK.

Even Though You're Making a Funny, SEVERAL Criteria Should Be Factored In...

Padding of the Gloves & Rounds CHIEF Among them...Turn of the Century Era Fighters Fought CONSIDERABLY More Rounds...Even the Reduction from 15 to 12 is a Factor...Some "Punchers" Got A LOT of their KO's AFTER the 12th Round, Which Would DRASTICALLY Impact their KO % & "Punchers" Perception, if they Fought Today...
