I don't really know what a cult classic is.

Basically a movie that didn't get mainstream "acceptance" when it came out and has gained a lot of passionate fans since. Key word I think is "cult". Like a small group of die hard fans of something.

Like anything else the terms and why they originated changed. A lack of general mainstream acceptance upon release however is the best way I can think of to describe such a film.

Kurt Russel's 80s films seem to be a bit like that.

Big Trouble in little China definitely fits the description: made for a budget of $25 million, had a lifetime gross of $11.1 million, was trashed by critics and today has a loyal fan base that loves that film. I personally couldn't stomach that film: after 30 minutes I push the stop/eject button of my vcr and returned it to the video club the same day.

How has no one mentioned Donnie Darko? The definition of a cult classic.

The Crow is considered a cult film even though the film was a critical & box office success. It appeals to action buffs, Goth & Emo kids, tragic romantic girls, and horror fans plus the soundtrack sold like hot cakes. You still see people dressing as the Crow in Halloween and at Comic-Con.

The Room is brilliantly bad, best cinematic experience ever. I've seen it twice and watched it on the Thursday just gone

Big Lebowski has to rank pretty high. There are two pubs round these ways named in reference to it. 'Lebowskis' and 'Little urban achievers club' :limp: Worst name ever. My pal works in that one. 7 quid a hot dog. Piss off.

If you don't like that film then it is you who is in a cult.

Coen Brothers probably have a bunch of movies that could qualify. "Blood Simple", "Raising Arizona", and the astoundingly remarkable "Miller's Crossing", which didn't get a single Academy Award nomination and grossed about 1/3 of what it cost to make.

You can also pick just about anything made by Sam Fuller, from "The Big Red One" on down.

    "Manhunter"

People have finally come to the conclusion through the years, that this stripped down version of "Red Dragon" stands right up there with "Silence Of The Lambs" from this franchise.

While all the other attempts have been ambitious, they have also been pretty empty.

"Eraserhead". Horrible movie, but can't deny the cult. Mostly every David Lynch film has been pretty trash to me (outside of a few, "Elephant Man", "Straight Story", "Blue Velvet"), but he definitely has a following.

No, it's mostly white suburbanites who were 15 in 1975 that liked that stupid film... it doesn't have any particular hold on gay people.

You know what IS really big with a lot of gay people? The shit you like... Cher, especially
