It looks like the Rapture, but I doubt it will be about that. They will come out with a scifi angle and government conspiracy.

 

Well the trailer doesn't even hint at a religious explanation for the disappearance of the 2% of the population. There is a belief since the late 1960's that aliens will abduct a portion of the world population and relocate them in another planet. This could be that scenario instead of the Christian rapture. After all, this is HBO not TBN.

No. I didn't. I don't search everything I look at on the net, but I doubt that this is an HBO adaptation of the 'Left Behind' books.

 

What I am saying is that I doubt that this will be about the Rapture at all.

 

I know. I watched that shitty 90's movie "The Rapture" starring Mimi Rogers which was the most stupid take on the subject ever put on film. It created its on theology which only proved that a secular screenwriter writing about this subject is completely lost at following the dotted lines.

 

In Christianity there is only two views about the Rapture:the 'it will happen' view and 'it will not happen' view, this last one only supported by just a few denominations. Among those that do believe that a rapture will happen, there are three possible scenarios: the pre-Tribulation period, the mid-Tribulation period and the post-Tribulation period. If this series is indeed about the biblical Rapture, it is obviously based on the pre-Tribulation period stance, which is the most widely accepted in Evangelical America.

 

Pre-tribulation is wishful thinking by these money grabbing pastors. Everything will be okay, etc. If Jesus suffered, then we aren't immune.

 

Yup. No time wasted in showcasing the rise of the Anti-Christ, the plagues, world war III, the annihilation of three fourths of the planet's population and the series of cataclysms, including a meteor crash, that will make the existence of those remaining so terrible that they seek suicide. That scenario is for a $200 million budget film, not an HBO series.

From what I have googled about the book is based on is just like you said, but apparently will not try to solve the mystery of what happened. Moot point IMO.
