Gimme Shelter (2014) Vanessa Hudgens is a true revelation in this powerful drama based on a true story about a teenager runaway girl victim of physical & emotional abuse through out all her young life. Apple (an almost unrecognizable Vanessa Hudgens) rans away from her abusive drug addict mother (Rosario Dawson also delivering a great performance) and travels to New jersey looking for her biological father (Brandon Frasier) who is a total stranger to her. While finding him, she not only finds more rejection from his father's wife, but also finds out she is pregnant. Apple then must decide if she wants to go along with an abortion or keep the baby and probably end up repeating the same life mistakes as her mother unless she finds someone who can take care of her and the baby. 'Gimme Shelter' on the surface looks very similar to 2009's 'Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire' which was modest hit mainly by the publicity its producer Oprah Winfry gave it. 'Gimme Shelter' is as good or even better than 'Precious' and while the end was kind of manipulative to provoke an emotional reaction from the audience, it was also honest and faithful to the real life events this movie was based on. Too bad this film bombed, because more people should take note that Hudgens acting chops are better than playing a singing sweetheart in Disney's High School musical. Good movie. 8/10
