It's a testament to how old Martinez is, that this fight is even in question. There's no doubt whatsoever that the Martinez of circa 2010/2011 would fuck Cotto up. The thing is though, I think even NOW Martinez will summon up ONE LAST elite performance to end Cotto. Martinez TKO 10.
The mythical Martinez of three years ago fuck Martinez Martinez will win this because Cotto isn't a middleweight and he's not any better now than he was a couple of years ago just because he beat up a scrub in his last fight
I pick Martinez too, but he has clearly slipped (despite cdogg's hate-filled heart). Martinez' game is based on his reflexes and beating his opponents to the punch and at this age he can't be at his best anymore. Thus Cotto, being quicker than most middleweights (and quicker than Murray who gave Martinez plenty of trouble) has a chance to catch him enough to take the win, but I expect Martinez' stoppage victory late
I have a hard time understanding your hate for Martinez. To say he was a DAMN good fighter 3 years ago is nothing more than FACT. Did ANYBODY ever say he could beat prime versions of Hopkins, Hagler, Monzon, Jones, Toney, ect? No. So why the hate?
His style is shit, his opponents are shit... he's shit He's no greater a fighter than Hugo Corro He's better than Keith Holmes and William Joppy, but they'd both give him problems He was in the right place at the right time Fuck him and fuck all y'all screw you guys, I'm going home
why? because outside of you, I bet nobody here picks Cotto sincerely also, I hate the guy. He's an awful fighter to watch. Him getting stopped would be very amusing to me
It is worrysome when you see Maravilla is 39, but I still think he has enough in the tank to take this win.
Martinez is fun to watch. Just because the guy isn't technically brilliant, doesn't make him non-compelling. And there is a LEGIT chance of Cotto winning if Martinez's legs are totally shot. Thing is, Cotto's chin has always been pretty dodgy, and he'll NEVER been Duran defensively, and he's ALWAYS had a history of fading late.
Martinez has the height/reach, speed, power advantages will weigh 175-180 on fight night....Yet Cotto is the only pro fighter in that ring..... Cotto by TKO 7 *Can't get the Trout fight out of my mine...
He's not fun to watch at all he moves around like a chimpanzee, throws a haymaker and clinches... it's fucking awful the only good thing about him is that even the horrible guys he's fought have touched him up because he's so fucking dumb and unskilled the most entertaining moment of his career was when Chavez nearly stopped him after deciding to throw 5 punches in succession for the first time after 30+ minutes of not bothering
Marlon Starling knew how to box and Martinez doesn't Marlon would suplex Martinez and shit in his mouth Sergio would be soldering surge protectors in Sioux City by Saturday
Cdogg loves to overrate Marlon Starling. Starling was a very good fighter, but I remember one time he said that Starling was in the same class as McCallum. Comical statement.
Oh shit, we already had it out on this one But you just had to bring it back up McCallum is a greater fighter than Marlon Starling because he had a better career, was more consistent But at his best, Starling was in the same class as McCallum at his best I don't see how it's even debatable ... The difference between fighters historically most often comes down to consistency and longevity... That's why McCallum is greater, higher ranked... But if you had a fight between McCallum and Starling at 154 or so, both in top shape, on their games, etc., it's fucking ridiculous hyperbole to suggest that is anything other than a really close fight... You haven't got fuck all to support it...
Outside of his little excellent blocking defensive style, McCallum was better than Starling in every facet of boxing. Even if they were the same natural size, McCallum would beat him by a clear margin. McCallum was good enough to have given guys like Leonard, Benitez, and Hearns a run for their money had he faced them. He even would have given Hagler a tough fight. Starling? Well, I think Hearns knocks him out, Leonard beats the crap outta him, and Benitez schools him.
Based on nothing more than conjecture When McCallum actually fought fighters at or near Starling's level, he struggled mightily Your made-up version of McCallum was an incredible fighter... Charley Burley, Ezzard Charles, Roberto Duran all wrapped up in one guy The real guy was nowhere near as good and never had an easy time against anyone anywhere near as good as the best Marlon Starling "oh, he beats him by a clear margin!" ... like he did Kalambay? Like he did Toney? Like he did against every top guy he fought? He woulda/coulda/shoulda done this that or the other thing against Hagler and Hearns and Leonard... His whole rep is based off of shit he never fucking did what fighter anywhere near Starling's class did McCallum ever easily defeat?
Michael Watson. And Watson, ironically enough, was very much similar stylewise to Starling. The way McCallum took him apart was better than the way Starling took apart Honeyghan. You're probably the only fan/expert/student of the game on the planet that considers Starling to be in McCallum's class.
