It's all relative. If you compare him to a fighter who has a VERY LOW boxing IQ, like Jermain Taylor, or Khan, then yeah Cotto is intelligent.

However, compared to most "greats" I've never found Cotto particularly intelligent.

I'll get flamed for this, but I think Tito had a higher ring IQ than Cotto. Tito had a better idea of what he wanted to do in there than Cotto does.

He was one dimensional, but he had an understanding of that one dimension, and he perfected what he was good at.

Cotto on the other hand has often seemed confused on what adjustments to make, and has never really perfected one style.

Cotto's the worst 4-division champion ever.

When I think of "technically smart" I've DAMN SURE never thought of Miguel Cotto.

    "He's too technical and smart"

If by "technical" you mean stiff and "smart" you mean average, sure

This is why I was rooting for Martinez. I knew the hype storm would be HUGE if Cotto pulled it off, and by goddamn, I was right!

In terms of QUALITY of Rican fighters, I'd put Cotto a tier below the likes of Gomez, Ortiz, Benitez, and Tito.

You realize you are being extreme right. You are calling my post extreme by saying the man can beat Fernando Vargas and is an Intelligent fighter. It's you with the issue dude. It's worse than MWS and Kostya.

Bullshit! MWS absolutely LOATHES Tszyu. To the point where he said that Brandon Rios could beat Tszyu. I would never suggest that a scrub like Rios could beat Cotto. I don't hate Cotto at all. I've ALWAYS been indifferent about him. Never been a Cotto fan, nor a Cotto hater. I just think he's being overrated.

Calling him smart and could beat fernando vargas is not a hype storm that came as a result of him beating a Shot martinez bro.

Cotto is not beating Vargas, unless we're bringing up the one that fought Mayorga

Tito is not in the class of Benitez, Gomez and Ortiz. Let's be real here. Because of Duran, he gets forgotten, but I'd add DeJesus to that list

He'd hammer the fuck out of Cotto, but he's much closer to Cotto than he is any of those dudes

No one is hyping Cotto, its just absurd that certain posters (Xcrement) picked Martinez to win by tko no less and now can't manage to give the guy some credit.

Vargas is not a better fighter than Cotto. Maybe Vargas could have been something if he had a different trainer and didnt take so much punishment young. But he is not on Cotto's level. Cotto is more skilled and has achieved much more.

Here's a better question: Is Cotto greater than the all-time jazzerciser Calzaghe?

I think the majority of fans (me included) and boxing experts picked Martinez to knock Cotto out. I dont think anyone expected Cotto to dominate the way he did. Like RJ said, he was firing on all cylinders that night.

We're talking head-to-head... Cotto's not more skilled at all and he is certainly not on a different level

This would imply he's somehow on a different level than Winky Wright... He isn't... Wright would whup his ass

Cotto isn't at the level of guys that actually beat Vargas at or near his best... Not even close unless you are just blindly wishing it to be true

His comp is a LOT better

But a strong case could be made that Calfaggy is a better fighter
