I really don't find anything unlikable about either guy. Roach may be a little arrogant but who could blame him. Maybe people don't like all the attention they get? Or maybe they're fans of fighters these trainers have gone up against?

This. He seems like a regular guy.

People seem to not like him because the pity his disability generates...as if having a disability means someone should be a perfect, completely humble guy immune to such worldly vices like having an ego.

He's never done or said anything to me particularly misanthropic or cynical and in general is very mild-mannered and down to earth with the media and his fighters.

People are innately ableist in nature.

I remember seeing a guy in a wheelchair at a supermarket and a couple of people asked him if he needed help with anything and he sort of declined in a ornery kind of way and went about his business, you would've thought he was Adolf Hitler afterword, the people wrote him off as "cocky" and "arrogant"

I personally just let it go because you can tell when some people aren't in a mood particularly if they feel they are being patronized

With Roach, you have people suggesting he "hides behind his disability" and whatnot, my question is WHEN? I've never seen him do any such thing really, but of course the imaginary perception is that if only Roach didn't have that damn Parkinson's everyone wouldn't give him a pass for acting like a jerk....when the reality is it's really just because the "jerkish" things he didn't weren't that notable or frequent.

Yeah it's almost like he should be sweet and nice all the time because we sympathize with him being disabled. But that is not Roach's problem. He has a right to be a normal guy and not have to fucking put on a great face all the time.

Please tell me you're not salty about Pacquiao's nickname.

Agreed, that's exactly how it seems to me. And the things REED highlighted are very much in normal guy territory, downright tame compared to most of the smacktalk that goes on here for example.

It was unfortunate for Pac that he went with that nickname. Sure, he had great rivalries with Mexican fighters at the lower weights and was on top for most of it. (2-0 with MAB, 2-1 with Morales, and 3-1 with JMM.) He is an exciting fighter and has a lot to offer fans of all races. When he went with that nickname Roach gave him, almost every Mexican and Mexican-American I know began hating Pacquaio if they didn't already. I was even rooting against OTHER Filipino fighters because of that. Since he's moved up in weight, I'm pretty neutral on Pacquaio. sometimes i cheer for him. Sometimes against him.

Is it the worst thing ever? No. But it sure as hell didn't endear him with us.

The face palm was for you thinking you could speak for Mexicans because you LIKE Mexican figters.

Picture this. Say you were a fighter there in the UK. You happen to beat three Pakistani boxers in a row. So you're trainer comes up with this genius idea. How abaout you call yourself the "Pakistani-Exectioner." Does that sound like a good idea to you? You call yourself that. Now would you be surprised that Pakistanis in England didn't like you?

Or the Irish-killer, The Arab Assassin, any name like that. IMO, you have to be a dickhead to even come up with a name like that let alone go with it. REED said he and most blacks would have a huge problem with someone calling themselves the "African-American killer." You shouldn't be surprised when people hate you over a stupid name like that.

Again, like I said I don't take stuff like that seriously. The stuff Hopkins and Tyson said means nothing to me.

If I was Mexican I'm pretty sure I would feel exactly the same way.

And no I wasn't speaking for Mexicans, I was speaking as someone who likes Mexican fights, who should - on paper - be offended by Roach's comments.

I lived in Japan. I admire many things about Japanes culture. I understand things that wouldn't offend me would offend them. I would never have the BALLS to step up and say what Japanese people SHOULD and SHOULDN'T be offended by.

And if a Mexican fighter had any name that was referencing killing Puerto Ricans, or killing Israelis or whatever, I'd think he was a dickhead.

I don't hate any of those trainers but they are annoying. One thing that Freddie Roach does is that every time his fighter wins he gives the old "Taking candy from a baby" speech. The other fighter was so flawed that they knew he'd make the same mistake every time...piece of cake.

It makes you want to see his fighters lose.

Roach is more overrated as a trainer, that's for sure.

People say Angel Garcia is good for boxing because he's controversial and talks a lot and he's colorful.

The dude is a loudmouth, classless piece of shit blow hard trying to live vicariously through his son. Garcia seems cool and confident but his father is a piece of shit.

Speaking of which, Danny Garcia just was added to the Shawn Porter-Kell Brook fight card in NY on August 9. Opponent TBA.

The vibe I get from Angel is that he talks smack partially to the hype the fights, because Danny is relatively soft spoken. I have a hunch that behind the bravado, he's a decent guy. He'd go to WAR for his son, that's admirable.

It's not like Ruben Guerrero, who comes across as a TOTAL piece of shit, simply because that's who he is.

    Angel is a hype man/trainer.

Okay, that would explain why he does it in press conferences. But he gets hyped up and starts frothing at the mouth during interviews that are going to be seen by 150 hard core boxing fans. He's disrespectful to other fighters. His sht about bringing up Islamic terrorists with Khan and badmouthing Argentinians all being on welfare is over the line. If it were Pavlik's dad saying that, they'd say he was KKK member. And when he was at the press conference for his son and Mattysse and he was calling people out to come up there and fight him, you really just see a despicable, bitter old nobody who is living through his son now.

Yeah, you do have a point. It's possible he's just an ass.

I personally find Garcia, and Guerrero to be bigger assholes.

I don't see how. The guy is legit. I think it's yet more Roach hate to dismiss him as a trainer and call him a "pad guy" or whatever

Everyone he trains looks better to my eyes. Pacquiao is the prime example, but obviously just an amazing fighter. What about Maidana, do you think he would have given Floyd a close fight pre Roach?

The good news from an entertainment stand point is that it's very possible a Garcia-Guerrero fight will get made later this year. The Ruben/Angel press conferences are gonna be EPIC!

Sticks and stones. Don't they teach that shit anymore?

It was Mexican Assassin, not Mexican Hater or Christian Crucifier or Muslim Murderer.

I guess I just think the nationality shit is funny. Fuck it, if you can make money playing off of nationalism, go for it.
Crossing into religion or racism is different. While I personally wouldn't want to be affected by it, it makes more sense to be.

The shit eventually bites you in the ass, but so what? If it makes you more money, go for it if that's your thing.

Garcia is a street guy who made it big. The guy is not use to the limelight. But everything he said was true. Lucas turned out to be nothing for Danny. Which shocked the hell out of me.

Nobody was crying the blues over it but it made Mexicans cheer against him more rabidly and want to see him get stretched. IMO, he should have rejected that nickname. Nobody has even had the balls to answer my simple question. Would you call yourself "The Irish killer" "The African American Executioner" or any name like that?

Oh and remember who had the last laugh. :Chainsaw:

He's a great fighter and is exciting to watch.

But I don't know ANY Mexicans who were for Pac when he was fighting Morales or Marquez the first few times. When he's fighting Cotto and Mosley and if he fights Mayweather, a lot of Mexicans back him. Even against margarito because a lot of people hated him after the handwrap scandal.
