I don't think Ali fought regularly for 5+ years after losing to Holmes. Johnson showed what smart aggression does to a guy like RJJ. Short jabs. Head movement. Not crowding one's self. RJJ had no answers.
Jones Jr. was already washed-up Roberto Duran fought regularly for years after Pat Lawlor beat him, establishing the blueprint The blueprint for Tarver and Johnson and the other guys who followed was simple... wait until fighter drops down dramatically in weight at an advanced career age, notice fighter looks suspiciously pekid, throw punches and finally, profit Glen Johnson would have been handcuffed and shutout like every other guy Jones fought if he was anything like his younger self
Roy had Also Been DECLINING 4-5 Years PRIOR, but we Can Pretend that WASN'T the Case, If You Like???... REEDopcorn:
RJJ landed plenty of hard shots against Johnson. But unlike Telesco Johnson knew how to integrate offense and defense. And he fought at the right distance.
The FACT that Roy's Legs were SHOT TO SHIT had Quite a Bit to Do w/Johnson's Ability to Fight @ the "Right Distance", Doub... REEDalm:
I think tarver would always be a stylistic nightmare for Roy, and hi performances against Roy were not only the result of Roy decline. In the Johnson fight, on the other hand it was clear from the get go that something was wrong with Jones
I think nightmare is stretching bit I agree Jones still would have had his troubles with Tarver even when he was in his prime. Tarver was patient and didn't give many openings to work with which "annoys" natural counter punchers. Timing beats speed, but Roy was quicker than most opponents could ever think. His reduced reflexes were exploited and he counted on them probably more than any fighter.
RJJ often fought guys off the ropes. Especially aggressive ones like Johnson. It's not like he "boxed" guys with foot-work. Against guys intimidated by his speed, he could lunge in and out but Johnson was throwing with him so that wasn't going to work. RJJ was obviously in the second half of a long career against Johnson. But Johnsons durability in that fight along with some nerve, and again the right distance and short jabs was indeed a combination RJJ had rarely had to contend with. Griffen too had showed some of the same ingredients in their first fight.
Roy Fought Off the Ropes to Open Up COUNTERING Opportunities...When that FAILED in the 1st Griffin Fight, Roy CLEARLY Demonstrated he Could POWER his Way Through that Style, Didn't He???... Prime Roy Jones ALWAYS Dictated Distance...If he DIDN'T Want Guys to Get Close to Him, they WOULDN'T, Even if that Meant Getting On his Bicycle...After Del Valle Got Close Enough to DROP Roy, he NEVER Threatened him the Remainder of that Bout... Glen Johnson Kicked Roy's Ass for 8-9 Rounds...It was ACCUMULATION Which was Roy's Undoing, Not Any SINGLE Shot, as Was the Case w/Tarver...Moreso, Roy's Legs were COMPROMISED to the Point he COULDN'T Dictate Distance Anymore... If Roy Had 50% of the Mobility he Possessed in his PRIME, He'd have Safely Won a UD or Eventually FOLDED Johnson in Half w/a Counter to the Body... The FACT Glen Johnson was HURT by That Version of Roy & Required 8-9 Rounds to Dispatch Him, ISN'T a Good Indicator of How he Does vs. a PRIME Roy Jones...Sorry to Bust your Bubble, Double... REED:mj:
It was clear as day that something was wrong with Jones from the first round of the FIRST Tarver fight, never mind the second one
If Double L honestly, and truly believes that Glenn fuckin Johnson would have any chance against say, the Jones that beat Toney, Brannon, or Sosa, then he's simply off his fuckin rocker. Glenn Johnson was an ordinary fighter, and Roy EASILY defeated SEVERAL fighters better than Johnson in his prime.
