So what kind of match are they playing, is it a friendly or some kind of UEFA qualifying shit?

"77 min: You've got hand it to Celtic, they've just performed a magnificent act of not scoring. Commons got on the ball 25 yards out, left of centre, and danced in and out before shooting low and hard. Plunging to his right, Magnusson saved, but could only parry, Boerrritiger and McGregor converging and somehow failing to finish, partly through ineptitude, partly through a decent recovery. But even then, the ball broke to Pukki, who swayed left to open the angle, and with the net empty, couldn't quite curl sufficient instep around it, cracking the post halfway up. "

That's ridiculous. Obviously not every club has players coming back from the World Cup this is way too early to be doing any kind of qualifications regardless of league.

    Are half the players hungover?

    sure sounds like it!

it's preposterous that Celtic has to beat these kinds of clubs just to get into the fucking GROUP stage... They win the league every fucking year, they made the group last year (an AWFUL group) and the round of 16 the year prior

Have you even HEARD of this fucking club they are playing? I assumed the capital of Iceland had a club, but other than that...

Good result for Shellick in the end. Should be enough to progress.

I'm struggling to care. We can't compete in the CL with this squad. I don't think we'd get out a Europa group

Haven't you read the memo? Celtic are just another feeder club now - one of the many who try ever so hard to get an invite to the big lad's party where they can collect a bag of cash before being ushered quietly home again so the proper clubs can play out.

Is the CL cash a necessity for Shellick this year or does it not matter with precisely no real competition at home again this coming season? i don;t really follow 'top level' football enough any more to know.

Obviously Hut would know better, but i'd imagine that CL cash is nice aid in helping them consistently stay ahead of the pack domestically.

I don't know what can be done but maybe limiting or removing foreign ownership might something that could be done to combat the sugar daddies with their toy sports franchises.

I have loads of ideas involving spending and salary caps, limits on non-national players, financial rewards for academy development, equal distribution of TV revenue, limiting 'Champions' competitions to actual 'champions' of things etc but as they all involve the leveling of the playing fields and the limiting of power and cash among the vested interests, not one has any chance at all of ever being implemented.

Celtic are so much bigger than every other club in the league it is beyond parody. The Scottish league was probably the first 'major' league to turn into a non-competitive wasteland - only two clubs have won the league there in 29 years and only once has a club broken the Rangers-Celtic duopoly (until the Rangers administration fiasco) in all that time. Even without the Cl money, Celtic to win the SPL next season is as close to a certainty you could find anywhere in world football.

When it comes down to it the problem everywhere is the rules don't really apply to the super rich. Either they are the ones creating them or heavily lets call it "influencing" them. If "they" somehow get punished after all of the appeals and favor calling in what is the usual penalty? A fine.

Laughable to billionaires who are in it purely as another means to flaunt their wealth.

It would only be a start (and probably impossible to put in place) but I think a ban from UCL play for a minimum of 3 years would be good start. Prestige plays an important part in these competitions. If Johnny Oil Tycoon has the best team (money can buy) but can't actually prove it, the value is diminished even to him.

    That's lame. :(

I guess this is the folly of having a total free market in a sporting leagueZ

I've always found this aspect hilariously ironic.

Europe, champions of Socialism and more egalitarian business practices actually out capitalists Murica when it comes to professional sports.

Then again, Murica only swears by the free market when it benefits the rich white men that run this place.

I posted a similar perspective a while back about the irony of it all. It is much more nuanced and complicated though.

To make a cheap example Texas and New York will agree to something before Russia and Ukraine do. FIFA and UEFA have to consider real politics. Just look at the qualifying "nations" for the next Euro tournament.

The NFL doesn't have to worry about such shit. Their damage control is concussions or politically incorrect statements on twitter.

In the last ten seasons, Everton have finished in the second half of the table once (12th place in 2005-06.) The other nine years they have finished 4th-8th. Good call.

    Silent Neet,

If it's glory Ye're aftae - may Ah suggest that there is no finer club then the World Record fer Most League Titles holding, The Glorious Rangers. We have topped oor respective divisions fer the last 2 years and are set tae play in a League which looks likely tae havae higher, average attendance than the SPL.

Come and join us on oor continuing journey in which we have made many friends along the wee. Several former legends are back at the club this season and they are set fer many exciting battles in whit will doobtless be an ultra competitive League.

Follow, follow us, laddie... SEE YOU!
