Its both. Look at Roys body language when he floors Fry. Roy thinks he still has it. He needs the money but he thinks he still has it. Roy suffers from "Contingency Happiness" i.e. "When I get back to the top...." or...."Once I've gotten back to my best"....."As soon as I'm fit again".... Roy thinks that his return to greatness is dependent upon or contingent upon some small detail being corrected.

If Roy was just in it for the money {and he needs the money} he would just go through the motions. His body language suggests he thinks he's still got it.

Roy's back onthe championship trail. That hook was vintage Roy. Fry was no pushover, his last meal was on july 5th, dude was hungrier than Roy before his first championship fight 20 years ago. That says a lot about the kind of feat Roy just accomplished.
