Yeah, Liston was Physically IMPOSING, was an Even Handed PUNCHER & Had a RAMROD Jab, but Spinks was a TRUE Heavyweight in his Own Right... How Does this Play Out???... REED:up:
I don't know if Liston gets him out of there as early as Tyson did but it would end quickly regardless.
Liston wasn't as fast and explosive as Tyson, so it lasts longer than 91 seconds. Spinks lasts about 3-5 rounds before getting blasted.
No "Mediocre", TRUE Heavyweight Beats Larry Holmes... TWICE... It Just Doesn't Happen... The Tyson KO was a Fluke...Since he was a TRUE Heavy, REED Thinks Spinks Could Stand his Ground in an Effort to Land the "Spinks Jinx"...It's DOUBTFUL Liston Ever Felt TRUE HEAVYWEIGHT POWER like That Before... REED:woo:
This just in... Every guy Tyson KOd in less than 3 rounds was NOT a TRUE Heavyweight since the definition of TRUE Heavyweight is apparently a guy who can mix it up with Mike Tyson and easily handle his power while also hurting him in return
This just In... Any Guy that Successfully MAKES a Particular Weight Class is a TRUE Member of that Weight Class...Doesn't Matter if Speed, Strength or Power is LOST or Not...It Also Doesn't Matter if You Have the Physique of James Toney @ the Higher Weight... REED:elmo:
Yeah, that makes sense, actually There is no "TRUE" middleweight division... you weigh in between 155-160, you are a MIDDLEWEIGHT regardless of whether or not you were better as a Welterweight or better as a Super Middleweight based on your hypotheticals, "True" middleweight seems to mean "guy I think could fight on even terms with Carlos Monzon" which would essentially disqualify 99.9999% of 160 pound boxers in history
just as a reminder to anyone reading this exchange, this started because REED thinks it is preposterous for the guy currently holding THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD to be classed as a middleweight
Correction, REED Thinks it's PREPOSTEROUS to Call a Guy who was SMALL @ '47 & TINY @ '54 a 'TRUE Middleweight", on the Strength of BEATING an Injured, Inactive, 40 year Old who just Sooo Happened to Be the Lineal Middleweight Champion... Cotto Weighed a WHOPPING 155 for that Bout, When the Limit was 160...Yeah, he's a "TRUE Middleweight", Alright... REED::
"TRUE Middleweight" is a bullshit distinction, man... means nothing You are either a middleweight or you aren't Miguel Cotto is a middleweight holding the middleweight title That means he should be expected to defend his title against other middleweights Last I checked 155 = Middleweight
Pernell Whitaker was a jr. middleweight Fixed^ "True" is a bullshit designation When Pernell Whitaker weighed 154 pounds and fought at that weight, he was a Junior Middleweight. End of story.
no, that's the LIMIT 154 is the Limit for Jr. Middle If you weigh MORE than 154 but less than 161, you are a middleweight
Apparently... Nevermind the WORST Version of Whittaker we Ever Saw was at '54 & Nevermind how SOFT his Body Looked There OR the Fact he was Straight Up DWARFED by JC Vasquez... Sweet Pea Whittaker was a TRUE Jr. Middleweight... REED:up:
"TRUE" Junior Middleweight is meaningless "this is the worst version of this fighter" ... that has no bearing on anything... When Jose Napoles got beaten up by Carlos Monzon, he was a middleweight... a shitty middleweight, to be sure, but a middleweight nonetheless Pernell Whitaker was absolutely a Junior Middleweight when he fought in a boxing ring weighing 154 pounds
I'll quote Luther Vandross here...if only for one niiggghhhhtttttt..... He went back to 147 after that. His last fight was probably at 154 (on FNF's) when he threw out his shoulder then OD'd that night.
lovely... what did he weigh when he fought Julio Cesar Vazquez and what was the name of the title on the line?
Yep, just like James Toney was a TRUE Heavyweight Despite Being Only like 5'9 or So, w/Tony Gwynn's Physique... REED:kidcool:
Heavyweight... A Division He ATE His Way Into...REED's Starting to Think you're GENUINELY Oblivious to What a TRUE, ie., OPTIMAL Weight or Weight Range Is... No Way in Hell was James Toney EVER a True Heavyweight & REED Doubts Many, if ANY, Would Agree that he WAS... REED:kidcool:
What is interesting in this fight IMO is that the small, weak guy was 6'2 1/2 and weighed 205 lbs without any fat whereas the big, powerful guy was 6'1 and 215 lbs. Not saying that this means much but it is interesting how we see guys so differently
If Anything, it ACCENTUATES REED's Point about TRUE Weight Classes... Spinks Could Be No More than 10-15 lbs LIGHTER than Liston Was, yet Still Have NOfuckingBUSINESS Being the In Same Ring w/Him... & it has EVERYTHING to Do w/the FACT Michael Spinks ISN'T & was NEVER a True Heavyweight... REED:hammert:
