Will Southampton be able to field a team this coming season? They're selling all their players.

In every single Premier league season except one, at least one promoted side was immediately relegated after only one season in the league... Sides that manage to stick around essentially do so by aiming for finishing 13th or so each season... Basically, your reward for winning the Championship is a chance to gamble with some TV money and hope you finish above the bottom three... With a group of clubs (Man U, Chelsea, City, Arsenal) that essentially are immune to relegation and a few others (Liverpool, Tottenham) that practically are, the top 5 is pretty easy to predict in terms of who will be there if not what order they will be in... Outside of that you are in semi-purgatory where you MIGHT crack the top 4 (say, Everton) , purgatory where you definitely will not crack the top 4 but you are probably too well off to be relegated (Aston Villa) or you are part of the yo-yo brigade

The English football press love to bash La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A for being 2, 3 team races but the Premier League has become as bad in that regard as any major league...

Pretty much. In La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A you have 2 or 3 teams competing for the title. Because in England it's 3 or 4 that somehow make its immensely more competitive.

The relegation/promotion teams? It's not even worth considering them. If you're in that zone you'll be in it until the end of time unless Sheik Al Oil buys the club. If a team puts together a great string a result and makes a nice push up the table don't even bother getting excited about them. Most if not all the key players involved won't be there next year.

Another thing they harp on about is that the "rest of the league" is better than the "rest of of the rest in THOSE leagues"

    Bullshit, if you ask me

In Spain, you've got Barca and Real as the traditional big two... But Atletico (won the title this year), Sevilla, Valencia, Malaga, etc. are fucking good sides... you telling me any of those teams couldn't hang with fucking Spurs? Of course they could

In Italy, you have the traditional giants (Juventus, Inter, AC) but you also have Roma, Lazio, Napoli, etc. ... Those teams can't make top ten in the EPL? Bullshit

Southampton. They've got a lot of money and a lot of space to fill on that club.

But my inside source tells me AZ(Dutch League) are after him now.

Alkmaar? What kind of cash are they offering? I know Torres' market value has obviously got to be lower than it was but it is a long way down from 50 Mil ... Seems remarkable that it would be down enough to be affordable to a smaller club like that

    McDogg's shit is paid for.

Did you know that when NUFC were promoted to the Premier League in 1993 the next season they finished 3rd and qualified for the UEFA Cup? Could you possibly imagine anything like that happening ever again? The only team to nearly do it were Ipswich Town who finished 5th in their season after promotion in 2000-01 and the very next season were relegated back to the Championship.

Spain has a much deeper league than any other European league at the moment. Recent years in the UEFA Cup have proven this. The Italian clubs you list are pretty weak, truth be told - Serie A is in one of the deepest troughs in terms of quality most people can remember. That league is currently very poor by comparison to pretty much any other time in modern memory.

Story in the guardian today that thousands of Indians they shipped in to build the 'tower of football' perfume bottle skyscraper haven't been paid for 15 months. They're all living 8 to a room being fed rice and doing forced labour, effectively.

    Russia and Qatar. Fuck off.

Would Ireland and Scotland have the ability to host it in a joint bid?

Strangely, no. The Ipswich board kindly gave the unexpected cash windfall for their fifth place finish to the manager George Burley who duly spent it on absolute crap which, instead of strengthening the team, weakened it enormously and resulted in relegation

The NUFC team which finished 3rd was initially weakened by the sale of Andy Cole to Man Ure but was then strengthened by the introduction of Ginola, Ferdinand etc and went on to become one of the most entertaining teams anyone can remember and the best NUFC side I've seen in my lifetime. Those were the days...

I watched a similar documentary (might have been Dispatches) essentially about how slave labour has built everything in Dubai and Qatar, including the Qatari world cup stuff. It was pretty grim viewing. At least the last world cup was a welcome return to form because the next two might just be absolutely fucking rank.
