Question: What club did the Royle Family support?

The show ran from from 1998-00 and they lived in the suburbs of Manchester. (They never stated exactly where they lived but by using the bus routes and places mentioned, hard core fans have surmised that they lived in Altrincham.)

    Random head-scratcher of the day

Four clubs have won the English top league three years in a row. They are:

    Manchester United (1998-2001 and 2006-2009)
    Liverpool (1981-1984)
    Arsenal (1932-1935)
Huddersfield Town (1923-1926) ... They last played in the top league in 1972

Herbert Chapman was Huddersfield manager for two of those title wins, he went on to manage Arsenal to their three-in-a-row. A great manager who is often overlooked because of the era he worked in.

Yeah, it's interesting to me that (at least in England) football history isn't really as celebrated pre-50s or 60s as say Baseball is here... It reminds me of the NFL... The NFL pre-50s really isn't looked at as a big deal on anywhere near the same level Baseball is

Arguably the most celebrated, talked-about baseball team of all-time is the 1927 New York Yankees... that was true when I was a boy and it is true today. I would guess that maybe 2% of NFL Fanatics could name the 1927 NFL Champions without looking it up or just outright guessing...

IMO, this is down largely to tactics in both cases (NFL and Fitbaw)

Largely, the same things that win you baseball games in 2014 won you baseball games in 1927... Changes in the game are more cosmetic than anything else... tactics are basically the same with only a few wrinkles (pitchers throw fewer innings, basically) ... The sport is easily identifiable across generations... Even the Dead Ball Era still translates decently... it's still easily recognizable as "Baseball", you just have to make a few statistical adjustments for low number of home runs and a few other minor things

The difference between the NFL in 1957 and 1927 is enormous, might as well be two completely different sports... The difference between 2007 and 1927 is obviously even more gigantic... But to wit, 2007 and 1957 have probably three times as much in common as 1957 and 1927 do... That's how much the sport changed

Fitbaw is no less dramatic... The game played in the 1920s era would be comically dated in today's world... It would have been laughed at in the 1960s ... 2-3-5 formations, straight lines of attack, etc. ... When you combine the ceaseless innovation of Fitbaw over the decades with crucial years missed during WWII (which, if you think about it, has the unintended effect of suspending the typical growth of nostalgia) it is no wonder that where you can find probably 10,000 well-regarded books about the 1927 Yankees or the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics or Ty Cobb or Honus Wagner, etc., etc. ... you'd have a hell of a time finding 1/8 that amount of worthwhile reading on Aston Villa of the 1890s or Newcastle of the 1910s, etc. ... They were playing a different sport than Manchester United in 1968 or Liverpool in 1984, really

    Good post.

So...Real are buying Falcao and shipping off Di Maria...I was thinking they could do with one more striker and one less playmaker.

It wouldn't surprise me but the last I heard PSG has backed off Di Maria due to Madrid's asking price.

Seems like Hearts are preparing hard fer Sunday's big clash...

    From The Scotsman:

    "Hearts train with 10 men

HEARTS have been training with a 10-man team - just in case they have a man sent off in their Championship opener against Rangers at Ibrox.

Robbie Neilson admitted the unorthodox method yesterday, adding: “We know what it’s like when we go through there.”

Hearts have had three red cards in their last six visits to Ibrox."

Just whit are they implying? :will:

    Answer: Stockport County

They actually defeated Man City in '98 and then played in the league above them for the '98-'99 season. The show even keeps true with County playing their home matches on Friday nights instead of Saturdays as they did during that time.

Caroline Ahern was a fantastic writer, and it was a good show, I just found it a bit heavy viewing after a while

Gutbestuckt recommended it to me years ago. I'm just finishing the second season now. It has to be one of my favorite shows of all time. Brilliantly written (by Dave and Denise of the show with a third writer.) The kids and the grandmother are Mancunian. The parents and Twiggy(Onslow from Keeping up Appearances) are Scousers.

I could do without all the toilet humour from the show but it fits in with Jim Royle's personality. And one thing that pisses me off is that the writer's cannot keep a proper timeline. It has to be that bad on purpose. In the first season, Antony was 15. In the second season he turns 18. And there is no time lapse because the second season starts right afeter dave and denise's wedding. Also the Royles say they have been married 28 years in the first season ('98.) In the '09 Christmas Special, they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. (WAY OFF) :pissed: It's strange that it actually pisses me off.

New Order connection. Caroline(Denise Royle/Best) was married to Peter Hook. Ralf Little(Antony Royle) played Peter Hook in the film "24 Hour Party People."

Ralf Little played football professionally. While filming the show. I believe he played for Oldham Athletic at one point.

I fucked that up. He was in medical school when he was in the Royle Family then quit school to pursue acting and football.

    He played for these teams.

    2002–2003 Staines Town
    2003 Maidstone United
    2004 Edgware Town
    2007–2008 Chertsey Town
    2008 Stone Dominoes

And he made three appearances for the national team of Sealand.

The 'Unseen Hand' has been at play and Celtic are BACK in the Champions League Qualifiers!...

CELTIC have been handed a European reprieve after Polish champions Legia Warsaw were thrown out of the Champions League for fielding an ineligible player.

UEFA had opened an investigation after Bartosz Bereszynskiego came on as a substitute with two minutes remaining in the second leg at Murrayfield and Legia leading 6-1 on aggregate.

The 22-year-old was sent off in a Europa League game last December and, despite being left out of his side's first three European ties this season, it had been alleged that he was ineligible to play against the Hoops.

The Polish champions had confirmed that UEFA were probing the claims and had stated: "The club is preparing relevant information and explanations which will be sent to UEFA.”

The European game’s governing body met this morning in Sion and announced their decision, throwing Legia out of the Champions League.

This is not the first time that Celtic have been handed a second chance in Europe and in 2011 they were readmitted to the Europa League after Swiss club Sion fielded ineligible player :will:

UEFA threw Sion out of the competition with Celtic taking their place in the group stages.

Ronny Deila’s men will now take Legia’s place in the next Champions League qualifying round.'
