That's beautiful tae me - Ye've correctly kept the noons lower case, due tae their numerity. Lovely grammatical work, laddie (Ah'm lettin Ye off the sentence opener as Ah'm putting it doon tae post-goal excitement). Ye alsaw resisted putting those naughty umlauts ('Rock Dots') o'er the 'u' - Ah'm prood o' Ye.

I don't speak German but I've thought about having a notepad document containing letters with umlauts for copy and paste purposes.

Good man - there's naught like a well placed umLOOT tae send a shiver doon the spine o' the multitude o' 'subversives' oot there (j/k).

Last season, Ah did keep half an eye on the Bundesliga (we have highlights here in Scoatland) - feel free tae curl doon a post here once in awhile and we can compare Rangers and Dortmund notes, like.

    you should learn!

I have made vague stabs at learning Irish but barely anyone speaks it (I'm told there are some clubs in the metro area where diaspora get together and speak it, read it, etc.... But you have to learn a little first, obviously) ... tons of people speak German

I wouldn't have anybody to speak with either other than my dad. (or a few old ladies in my family who I'd rather not converse with at all)

One day I would like to take a trip to Germany. If/when I do i'll at the very least take a short course on the language.

My grandmother had a very thick accent. Some of the family's mimickery of German is based on her. :l3:

I actually have to get a new passport as mine expired years ago. I haven't exactly been rushing to get one as I don't have the money to go anywhere for the time being anyway. When I have more debt paid off I'd like to take a least a week holidays in a different country couple of years.

Agreed, that's fucking absurd. He's a good footballer who just happens to be really fucking fast too. He has a good footballing brain and knows how to be in the right place at the right time (just see his hat trick vs Valladolid), plus he's good from set pieces.Everyone had him down to fail and be exposed last season (including me) but he was great. Irish and Feebs are chatting utter bollocks.

Feebs hates him because he's a modern footballer, and worse yet, a modern footballer from the UK:giggle:

Irish hates him because he's on PEDs but not necessarily because he's on PEDs because they are all on PEDs and someone said something nice about him and praised him as a footballer but he's on the gear and does anyone doubt that he's on the gear? you lot are looking for heroes and there are none and Bale is everyone's hero but suarez is the devil and the BBC and SKY are in bed with Sir Alex and what of Rupert Murdoch? whose voicemails did Suarez hack? The whole lot are shite and some 17 year old was gassed to death in Flanders in 1917 so Bale could be on the gear and the FA could fight racism and what of the no-go areas in East London while everyone prattles on about Bale and Alan Hansen is a gobshite

Bale has been playing first team football from the age of 16. I remember him at Southampton, you could tell this kid had something. Jib Jib Cisse at Liverpool was fast as hell but he couldn't kick snow off a rope. Henry had the speed but not the all round game until he signed up with Arsenal. Speed is important but there is more to the game.

I didn't say he was crap. He is the absolute archetypal modern footballer and is very, very good at being it. Unquestionably so. He's very, very fast and he can kick the ball very hard and very accurately.

Simple question - if Bale were to get injured tomorrow and lost his pace, would he be 'as good' a footballer when he returned as he is perceived now?

    No, but neither would Ronaldo.

I'm not sure what this "modern footballer" thing even means.

 Has he fuck. Messi has a great football brain - the man can see passes, runs and opportunities before almost anyone else on the pitch. That's what makes his so good. Bale is a fucking sprinter who has been trained well to kick the ball hard and accurately.

If Bale lost his pace tomorrow he'd be absolutely shite. His entire game is based on the one thing he was born with - natural speed.

Agreed, which I why I'm not a huge fan of him either.

Xavi, Iniesta, Cabaye, Nedved, Litmanen, Sheringham, Scholes, Gascoigne, Zidane, Messi - some proper footballers (to name a few off the top of my head) who were skillful and clever without relying solely on being really fucking fast.

What I would also give Ronaldo is that he is a tricky little bastard with really fast feet as well as natural pace and he is a very, very good header of the ball. Ronaldo, for all he needs his natural speed, has other attributes. Bale is a sprinter who was coached to shoot hard and accurately. He's bloody effective at it, but that's all he is.

So if it a player is fast that should be held against them?

It's already been demonstrated that Ronaldo and Bale are more than just speed and affleticism.

Natural speed augmented by a gym regime and steroids.

I agree with you on the rest.

Luis Suarez will be fucking defenders up at the age of 40.

Bale is one or two tendon injuries away from being past his best.

Phillip Coutinho is a better footballer than Gareth Bale.

John Robertson was a better footballer than Gareth Bale.

Steve Heighway was a better footballer.

    BAle is Ivan Drago.

Put Diego Maradona in a phone booth with a ball. Get into the phone booth with him. Watch Diego leave the phone booth with the ball and your wallet. He will mug you and walk out of there.

Bale is about going past guys. Maradona was about not having to go past guys but being able to do it and at a snails pace at that, if he had to.

Watch Maradona vs England in 1986. He basically walks past them.

Only if it the entirety of their game. Ronaldo relies heavily on his pace but if he got injured tomorrow he could still be a very effective centre-forward because he is world-class in the air, for example.

Bale is just blistering pace and accurate shooting - the latter only comes into play because of opportunities created by the former. Take away his pace and I doubt he'd be able to adapt to anything else.
