There, in all of human history has never been, in athletics, a replacement for athleticism.

The criticism of Bale is somewhat absurd given he's better in every facet of football than the second leading goal scorer in the Premiership last year and he's only going upward from what I can see.

Is he? He's better in the air? Better passer? More skillful? Better vision? Better tackler? Greater anticipation? More instinctive?

    You are talking utter shite.

    1) Not sure if serious? There are loads of guys who are fast, strong, etc. who simply can not play football... Zinedine Zidane was probably never the fastest midfielder on any of the teams he played on much less compared to the whole world but he had an absurd level of technical quality and vision which made him more formidable than all but a handful of players on Earth during his career... Athleticism is very useful but it's by no means the whole story

    2) Even if this were true (it isn't), you are comparing two players who play completely different positions on different clubs in different leagues...

Bale is a winger, he's supposed to be fast. Heading the ball ala Ronaldo or slipping passes like Xavi is not in the job description. We are not comparing like with like.

To say Bale is speed and nothing more is false. He was a very promising full back at Southampton / Spurs. How many modern day players start at full back and end up on the wing / up front. Very few, in fact most wingers end up as full backs due to a lack of talent. Playing in a more advanced position requires more talent.

    Bale has skill

    <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Gt3sq7-keOk" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

    and technique

    <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WxGaFP77gFA" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

He is also strong on the ball (pre Madrid) & the guy can finish better than most strikers.

The problem is Reals valuation of the player. He's no Suarez, he's no Messi and he could never be classed among the all time greats because he doesn't see or influence the game like those guys. However, Gareth Bale is a very good football player.

I'm going to have to pick up FIFA 15 when it comes out... I never wound up buying 14... then I can go online and play a couple of matches against 15 year olds who play the game 60 hours a week and get killed 13-1 while being forced to play Catenaccio

Talks broke down or he had a falling out with the chairman. Mackay might take over.

When our game got postponed due to weather on 12 February of last year, I met a group of Palace fans and we took them drinking to pubs around Goodison. They were all about Tony Pulis. It's a shame that didn't work out.

I'm exclusively a Gateshead FC man this season. Won't be watching much PL - the enthusiasm just isn't there.

A shame. That boy is a good prospect. Strong, quick, skillful, clever - a rare breed in English football.

Rangers beat Falkirk two nil yesterdee evening in Scotland's best League. The second biggest news is the start o' the Premier League taedee - fabby, dabby dozy.

    and finally...

Both fitba codes appear tae be skelping baseball:

The average World Series viewer this year is 54.4 years old, according to Nielsen, the media research firm. The trend line is heading north: The average age was 49.9 in 2009. Kids age 6 to 17 represented just 4.3% of the average audience for the American and National League Championship Series this year, compared with 7.4% a decade ago.

Comparisons with the NFL are pointless. That behemoth of North American sports dominates nearly every demographic.

But kids make up a larger segment of the television audiences for the NBA, NHL and even soccer's English Premier League than they do for baseball.

Kids accounted for 9.4% of the NBA conference finals audience this year, compared with 10.6% a decade ago. They represented 9% of the NHL conference-finals audience in the spring. For Premier League soccer on the NBC Sports Network, kids are accounting for 11% of the audience.

How hard is it to gauge the distance of a simple free kick?
