Wow, Cyprus is leading Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 with 5 minutes left.

If that holds up it might cause civil unrest. Lots of blame will go around. I predict Herzegovina will demand indpendence from Bosnia.

They came close to qualifying not that long ago. I believe they defeated Italy in their qualifying group but they just missed out narrowly in the end.

Been a lot of good Welsh players and still are ... I hesitate to call such a small country "underachievers", still...

that's a bit of an underachieving national team, historically... not so much today but in decades past

Mexico has to be the biggest underachievers... Huge country where it's the most popular sport... they've accomplished fuck all with it, somehow

They came really close to qualifying for the '94 World Cup, just a goalkeeping mistake and a missed penalty in the final qualifier cost them. You're right though, they'll usually have one or two exceptional players (Giggs, Rush, Bale), some very good ones (Ramsay, Bellamy, Hartson, Speed, Hughes) maybe an average guy here or there (Earnshaw) but the rest are usually absolute DOGSHIT. They can never seem to get players from the top two brackets all together at the same time, so they just rely on the exceptional players to get results.

Forgot about that. That was Euro 2000 I think, they made the playoffs but lost 1-0 on aggregate to Russia.

Mexico hasn't even produced that many real stars, either

Hugo Sanchez, Rafael Marquez were pretty great players (the latter was dirty as fuck, though) ...

It is odd. I think part of the reason might be that they've always been more of a rugby nation. Their players are fiercely loyal though, both Bale and Giggs could have played for England if they'd wanted and had a shot at the biggest stage of all, but it never crossed their mind to do so, you've gotta admire that

Yep. You would expect with their population, professional league, and general love of the sport they'd have produced more top quality players and have achieved better than a quarter final exit at a WC by this point.

Second loss in a row for the Netherlands. I wonder if they still have some WC fatigue along with playing under a new coach or if they need Robben badly.

When I stayed in Wales I was at a hotel called "The Blackboy Inn" and their special of the day was the Quarryman's Faggots. (No idea what that is.)

It was a real PC experience.

Ah've travelled doon tae Wales many a time - mainly tae the moontains (Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia). But Ah've alsae watched quite a few rugby games at the old Cardiff Arms Park and the fabby Millennium Stadium. If Ye havenae awready - check oot the comedy 'Gavin and Stacey' which is set in Barry Island, Wales - it's a good laugh.
