At top level, speed kills, at scrub level, power prevails

If the fighters are at about same level and they are world class or close to it, faster guy wins 80 % of times.

However, if the fighters have less than ten fights and their records are 8-0 (3) vs 7-1 (5), 8-0-1 (1) vs 6-2 (5) or so, the guy with more knockouts wins 80 % of times.

    Discuss this truth

Knockouts excite the fans more than anything else and having a high KO percentage likewise attracts attention from promoters and networks. It's also easier to notice on a piece of paper. If you look up a guy's record and see 12 wins all by KO you tend to assume the guy is at the very least a puncher. Not surprisingly managers will try to match up their guy with opponents who are easier to take out in order to build such a record.

With more experience comes more skill and (is supposed to) bring with it the same in the opposition. At that point KO's are harder to come by so attributes like speed become more important as fights are more likely to go to scorecards.

None of this shit is knowable because boxing is not a real sport. Fighter's pick and choose who they fight.

But I'll say this. Guys with lots of knock outs are generally a lot less picky about who they fight.

Also, holding is the biggest weapon against punchers. Punchers don't have a analogous, albeit illegal equivalent to neutralize speed.

No. It's not. Boxing is a series of events engineered by promoters and tv networks. They do their best (bordering on propaganda) to give the impression that it's a true competition, but in many cases, for a variety of reasons, it simply isn't possible or in their best interest for the best fighters to face each other.

Champions from the past in many cases have been discredited because in many cases they never faced the best opposition (black fighters). Well what's the difference in terms of credibility whether a champion is not fighting the best due to skin color or because of promoter and network feuds? It may not be the crisis of racial equality that it was back then, but it's every bit the crisis of credibility when it comes to today's champions.

No. I'm saying we don't necessarily have a unbiased sample of match-ups between punchers and speedsters from which to surmise whether one attribute dominates the other. And the reason for this is that throughout history, boxing has not been allowed to function as a true sport the way other games like baseball have.

A side effect of boxing's dysfunctional organization is non standardized rules, the ability of influential fighters and promoters to lobby for advantages, and among other things, the tendency of judges and referees to exhibit favoritism when it serves their various benefactors.

If you can't see for yourself the multitude of ways that boxing is corrupt and unfair, think of it as a blessing because unlike me, you can presumably continue to enjoy the sport. I've reached a tipping point I'm afraid, in which I've become entirely disillusioned with boxing.

By the way, the press that supposedly "covers" boxing is entirely complicit in the sport's corrupt inner workings. They rely on promoters and managers for access, and evidently, place a greater importance on maintaining fruitful relationships with them than with holding them accountable and asking the questions that might actually help clean the sport up.

His rhetoric is a bit hardline for my taste on this topic, but Double L isn't saying anything that is demonstrably untrue. It's pretty reasonable stuff.

Definitely TRUTHS to What Doub's Saying, but he's Basically Painting EVERYBODY Associated w/Boxing (Down to the Ticket Vendors ) w/the Brush of CORRUPTION...Sure, the Deck was Stacked AGAINST Maidana, but More than Anything, he FAILED to Take Advantage of the Opportunities he Had...Instead of FOLLOWING Floyd, How 'Bout CUTTING OFF the Ring???...How 'Bout Being LESS Predictable w/your Punch Patterns???...Any Fighter w/2 Hands & an IMAGINATIVE Attack Can Overcome Boxing "Oppression"...Floyd was THERE for the Taking, Maidana just WASN'T Good Enough to Get it Done...

That's NOT Really the Press' Fault Though, Doub...A Member of the Media is INVITED to an Event...Promoters Should have THICKER Skin, but the REALITY Is, they Frown Upon Less than Glowing Articles about their Fighters & Will Often BLACKBALL a Writer for "Trying to Keep it REAL"...If a Guy Wants to Go ROGUE w/his Reporting, he'll Notice a SHARP Decline in the # of Credentials he Receives...

I guess it's yet another reason boxing cannot be considered a real sport.

And unfortunately for them, it doesn't say much for the writing profession when it comes to boxing. I mean, at the end of the day, they're basically PR people for the promoters. And that comes through loud and clear when you read the stuff.

Basically, until promoters/networks are forced to pay a price for their corruption, why would they do anything to curb it? I personally think they should go away.

It's one thing I agree with Atlas on.

You keep saying that Maidana was unimaginative and didn't do what he needed to do. But that's bullshit. If his offense were so benign, Bayless would not have needed to be paid off.

The biggest difference between the first fight and the second had nothing to do with the fighters. It had to do with the fact everytime maidana got close, all pbf had to do was grab one arm, and Bayless was there to restart the action.

If Bayless had done the same job in the 1st that he did in the second, the first would've looked exactly the same as the second.

To deal with bayless, Maidana would've had to beat pbf on the outside. Obviously there was no chance of that happening.

You are describing things you believe are problems with the sport, Double L. Imo, they are not things that prevent boxing from being considered a sport. I think boxing and mma are, at their core, the purest sports.

Nah, Maidana TRAPPED Floyd Along the Ropes, COUNTLESS Times...He'd Fire Off a Right, Followed by a Left, Followed by a Right, Followed by a Left...OR, he'd Fire Off a Left, Followed by a Right, Followed by a Left, Followed by a Right...PREDICTABLE Ass Punch Patterns, Thrown from the SAME Fucking Angles, Pretty Much ALL Towards the Head...How about DOUBLING or TRIPLING Shots???...The BODY???...THE ONLY Time Maidana Used the Same Hand w/CONSECUTIVE Blows, was When Floyd HELD his Other Arm...Aside from Then, Floyd Shoulder Rolled his Way from Most of Maidana's Shots, Because he'd ALREADY Faced him 1nce & KNEW his Punch Patterns...

Can we agree that if boxing were straight up fixed that it would not be a real sport?

If so, start from their and then consider all the ways boxing actually "is" fixed. Between judges, ring size, gloves, referees, weight classes.....there's all kinds of wiggle room for the fighter/promoter with more money and influence to make sure the right guy wins. And just because the "wrong" guy still has a chance because he "can" knock his opponent out (assuming he can given the gloves he may be forced to wear) doesn't mean it's not fixed.

If a promoter is able to improve the odds of his fighter's winning from 2:1 to 5:1, by exerting influence on judges, refs, gloves, etc.? How is that a real sport? It's more like a carnival fire eating show ("step right up. see if our champion can avoid the knock out...").

You're Working Under the ASSumption that EVERY Single Person Involved w/EVERY Single Fight is On the Take, Doub...For Better or Worse, REED is A LOT More Optimistic Than That...If That WERE the Case, Maidana NEVER Would've Gotten his 1st Fight w/Mayweather, Because he Most Certainly WASN'T "Supposed" to Beat Adrien Broner, Right???...Say what You Will about Broner, but he was on the Verge of HEADLINING his Own PPV's & his Loss to Maidana was THE Boxing Story of 2013...REED's Pretty Sure EVERYTHING You've Noted was Lined Up IN Broner's Favor, Nonetheless, Maidana Took Matters Into his OWN Hands & WHIPPED Broner's Ass...

You're basically arguing that since unexpected things happen in boxing, it is indeed a sport.

I'm in no way claiming that every fight is fixed. And even the most "fixed" fight in today's day and age can and sometimes does go the other way. So that's not the argument I'm making at all.

Yes, but that's not even remotely plausible, just hyperbolic nonsense, compounded by your last paragraph. Double Q for Quixote.

I dont get this debate. I mean take professional football/NFL. Though the fields are 100yds long and 53yds wide some games are played on grass vs turf. Some games are played in domes or open air stadiums. Some games are played in cold climates and other games are played in warm climates. Then you have the rain and the wind. Then you have MLB. No 2 stadiums are the same. Some parks are small some are big. The moral the story is that those are professional athletes and they have to adapt to their environment. Just like in boxing you gotta adapt to the weight the size of the ring the size of the gloves. Just get out their and compete. I'll Holla 5000

Oh. Ok. For a second there I thought boxing was corrupt and unfair. But I guess it's just like any other sport.

I think you do have a point with some of this, but you are also listing things that happen in many sports.

In hockey the home team always gets to change its line-up last, which gives them an advantage where they can put who they want against a certain line of the opposing team. This is done solely to increase the chances of the home team. No difference from the organisation favoring the favorite in boxing.

Also, the audience clearly influences the way referees play: sometimes they whistle for every minor contact, other times you get to hook your opponent for long time before you get a penalty. No different from trigger-happy refs in boxing

In basketball, there is the air conditioning system, lighting of the hall, different types of rims. Larry Bird told that it some hall, (I don't remember which) one of the rims was loose whereas the other didn't move. It is easier to score to that loose rim because even if your shot is a bit off, it goes in. The home team always got to play to the loose rim at the second half, when they were more tired it was easier for them to score.

In most leagues the schedule is planned to favor somebody. Some teams have to play more often or travel more than others which will affect their performance. These schedules are done based on getting as much audience as possible to the games. This equals the fixing you are talking about
