Not long after parting ways with the boys at Viacom and Co. (more on that here), former Bellator MMA lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez inked a new deal with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and will make his Octagon debut against Donald Cerrone at the UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which takes place on Sept. 27, 2014 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the pairing earlier today.

The promotion first tried to acquire Alvarez in early 2013, but then-Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney executed his right to match and what followed was a public and messy legal battle, one that kept the talented lightweight out of the cage for over a year. Their dispute was eventually settled and Alvarez (25-3) reclaimed his crown in an epic rematch against 155-pound nemesis Michael Chandler.

A rubber match was planned last May, but Alvarez was forced to withdraw due to a concussion.

Cerrone (24-6), meanwhile, has been red hot, stringing together four straight wins with four violent finishes. He was last seen beating the brakes off Jim Miller at the UFC Fight Night 45 event back in June and as a result of the Alvarez signing, will send Bobby Green off to fight someone else.

    Excited?

UFC 178 will be headlined by flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, who takes on top contender Chris Cariaso for all the marbles, while former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz gets back into action against Takeya Mizugaki. Conor McGregor, meanwhile, will make a quick turnaround to test his mettle against established featherweight threat, Dustin Poirier.

This will get historically low odds for fight of the night... :hammert:

Cerrone walks right through him, but it adds depth to an already solid card.

You're wrong on both counts. Alvarez is a much better fighter than Cerrone, and this card was terrible until this fight.

Kennedy-Romero is a great match-up. The McGregor-Poirer grudge bout should be solid. Plus the return of both Cruz and Cat Zingano coupled with Mighty Mouse defending his belt?

    That's a solid card.

And Alvarez isn't "much better" than anyone in the UFC's top 10 at 155.

If he proves to be much better than Cerrone, I will gladly eat crow. I'm a fan of Alvarez's style. He's fun and Id like to see him move up the LW ladder.

Mighty Mouse has just never caught on with me. And I couldn't care less if I ever saw the Decisionator fight again. The other fights are decent but not really PPV worthy.

In all honesty, I probably wasn't even gonna bother streaming the PPV, but with Alvarez-Cerrone, I will be buying it.

    Agreed on both counts.

I was a big fan of Cerrone when he first came on the scene looking like a beast but I think after the Diaz fight (where he was seriously exposed) he went on a bit of a losing streak for a while. I'm not sure because I haven't seen him fight since, so I didn't get to see him go on his win streak either. I'll be looking forward to this card.

I'm also kind of a fan of Mighty Mouse. I never anticipate seeing him fight but he usually delivers and is a top notch pro who stays on top of his game, and you have to respect that. It just seems Mighty Mouse hardly ever gets an easy fight though.

I thought Cowboy was fighting the black guy who decisioned Thompson?

Do you guys think Alvarez will even manage one win in the UFC? He's fighting Lesbian Henderson next, and Bendo will surely beat him too.

Alvarez has pulled a couple of tough fights to start his UFC run.

I suspect Alvarez will lose clearly to Henderson.

That loss will be followed by a couple of "pick em" fights against fringe guys like Lauzon and Gomi just fulfill his UFC contract. And then Alvarez is gone.

    Alvarez is gonna wreck Henderson.
