The funniest thing about the Newcastle/Gateshead bid, other than the obvious hilarity in Gateshead trying to being the capital of culture for anything other than crime and deprivation, was that they were considered such strong favourites that a few companies pre-emptively bought land and built various things in expectation of a flood of tourists to the region once they won. That, and that alone, is the only explanation for the massive Hilton hotel which now sits all by itself on the Gateshead bank of the River Tyne on the site of the old Oakwellgate slums which were finally levelled to make way for it.

A Hilton hotel. In Gateshead town centre.

Hilton are so embarrassed by their faux pas that they now call the hotel 'Hilton Newcastle Gateshead', even though it most certainly is not in Newcastle whatsoever. Dipshits.

It's in Gateshead. It's not in Newcastle. It gets used a bit but not much - who sensible wants to pay £200 a night to stay in Gateshead town centre?

I suppose a few people might stay at the Gateshead Hilton if they are visiting the massive opera house they built on the Gateshead Quayside as part of the Capital of Culture bid. Half a billion quid in public money given to Gateshead MBC and what do they do with it? Regenerate the town centre? Build a shitload of new social housing? Extend the Metro line to cover the west of Gateshead and the Metrocentre? Nope. They built a fucking opera house. In Gateshead.

All in all its pretty decent id say - thats bits just a generic modern shopping centre without a roof most of the area's spruced up old buildings, with some generic modern filler. One of the biggest pedestrianized areas in europe now, its claimed. i was hoping to visit again on friday but a ginger BAMPOT buggered up my plans so it'll probably just be manchester.

Liverpool has 0 shots in the first half. I think it would be better for Liverpool's chances if they increase that number.

 Chasing the gehry Bilboa effect like every other shmuck. Glasgow went for that a bit with the shite riverside museum. Happily the similarly grim wasteland on south of Glasgow city centre went the other way - 1000 publicly subsidized new flats, some for social rent, some to be sold. Turning out pretty jackson so far.

Scoring a goal would be helpful for Liverpool. However, I don't think they should take any shots because that is too risky. I think the best bet is to score a goal without taking any shots.

Why are none of you considering Villa in the Everton/Newcastle "bigger club" debate? It's bollocks not to include them and you all know it

There was nothing there. It's not like it was old and they made it look new. There was nothing and they made something. I like the older look of England as well but to come there when there was nothing and see what they did to me was great. To the east of that is the cavern quarter where the Beatles sites are and that still looks old and classical. Not to mention the 5,000 additional permanent jobs they created. Before that, aside from the Cavern quarter, the city centre was pubs and fish and chip shops.

They were included. I just think Everton are 'bigger' - most of Villa's league titles and FA Cup wins came before WW1 and, if they hadn't won the European Cup then they would have little claim to make IMO.

I'm all for taking wasteland and making it useful. I just don't like it when the 'useful' thing is a massive bunch of shops and Nandos in shimmering glass and concrete. They did something similar in Gateshead in 1986 with the Metrocentre - turned a derelict wasteland into Europe's largest shopping and leisure complex. I haven't been near the place in over a decade; can't stand it. It's all too Brave New World for my tastes I'm afraid.

Liverpool's a bit odd like that: its got some of the grandest buildings in Britain even including London - stuff like the three graces, the anglican cathedral & world museum are just fucking epic - but the generic victorian/edwardian fabric is on a much smaller and more patchy scale to Manchester or Glasgow. I'm not totally sure what the history is with that.

That Arsenal result is some consolation for the robbery they perpetuated in Belgium last time out. Karma can be a real bitch.

They've won one league title in the last 104 years... Yes, they won the European Cup in 1982 (along with the Super Cup) and an FA Cup in 1957... But other than that? You might as well include Forest in the discussion... They've managed to survive in the Premier League but that's basically it... When were they last a serious threat? Everton has competed in more top flight seasons than any other club, they've won 8 league titles in the same 104 years, 4 FA Cups (runners up 5 times) ... They won the CWC in 1985 and seemed destined to win the European Cup before circumstances beyond their control prevented them from having the chance to do so... Everton has done all that while contending with Liverpool in the same city... Who has Villa had? West Brom? Birmingham? I'd wager Everton has a much bigger fanbase, as well
