If Mike Tyson didn't punch people then he wouldn't have won fights. The fact is they DID win it, so it counts, who cares when the trophies came? They all count.

Villa have a large fanbase. As I said, it doesn't matter when the trophies came, as long as they were won.

Yes it does, ya daft shite. A club can be an absolute giant of a club once (Villa certainly were pre-WW1) but become less relevant as time (in this case fucking nearly a century) passes.

Of course it matters when... Aston Villa won playing a game that was primitive by the standards of my 7 year old niece's league... 10 guys up front following the guy with the ball

For me 'bouncebackability'/longevity is the thing rather than total trophy haul. If you come back again and again at different times to compete for trophies & attract big crowds then thats the measure of an enduring club.

AgREED. Truly big clubs are competitive in multiple eras. They don't have to necessarily win loads at separate points, but competing for titles/trophies, attracting big name players and large crowds etc is more important than winning a shitload of trophies when players used rolled-up newspapers for shinpads and playing two centre-halves was considered a tactical masterstroke.

    Arsenal in spineless capitulation shocker.

As for Liverpool, I applaud Rogers' team selection strategy, Champions League games cannot be allowed to distract his team from their overall goal of qualifying for next year's Champions League.

If everton are the 4th greatest i think itd be pretty hard to separate Spurs, Villa, Newcastle & Chelsea as the 5th on the basis we've agreed on.

Chelsea are tinpot. I firmly believe that. Take away their modern era of cheating (first with Bates, who borrowed and borrowed until they were near bankrupt, and then the ruski mafia man) and they have fuck all. Spurs are weird - I'm not convinced by the true strength of their actual support (me and McDoggy were arguing this point at the weekend) and they are a 'cup' side as much as anything else, but overall I'd include them in the list. Villa are a historically great club in the same way the Uruguay are IMO. They don't belong it that company, European Cup win or no.

I have been predicting Villa's demise for some years now and still they defy the odds and prove me wrong. But I still think they will follow the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds into the Championship. I think 2015 could be the year.

They've been shite for years, save a few financially doped years under O'Neill when they finished 6th. The last decent Villa side worth a damn was Ron Atkinson's, twenty-odd years ago.

I was wondering about that lineup but didn't read anything pre-match and wasn't listening to the announcing. Gerrard, Balotelli, Sterling and Coutinho all on the bench? Maybe a few of them suffered some recent knocks but that's absurd.

Brian Little did some good there after Atkinson went. Won the League cup and finished in the top 5 twice before John Gregory came in.

But at the time, when everybody else was playing the same game, they were the best in the country at it. That's what counts.

I remember them winning the European Cup. Couldn't remember them doing well in the league under little. Shows how memorable a side they were I suppose...

All my stat books are packed
    Sports bets ready to go
I'm standin' here watching channel four
I hate to switch off the telly and say goodbye
    But the dawn is breakin'
    It's early morn
    The taxi's waitin'
    He's blowin' his horn
    Already I'm so lonesome
    I could die

So text me and update for me
Transfers on fantasy football wait for me
Add up my scores like before I go
Cause I'm leavin' on a Jimmy plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh Fightbeat, I hate to go

There's so many times I've watched a touchdown
So many times I've heard the whistle sound
I tell you now, they mean everything
Ev'ry place I go, I'll think of Match of the Day 2
Ev'ry song I sing, I'll sing for white and blue
When I come back, I'll update your league positioning

So text me and update for me
Transfers on fantasy football wait for me
Add up my scores like before I go
Cause I'm leavin' on a Jimmy plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh Fightbeat, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
    One more time
    Let me post to you
    Then close your eyes
    I'll be on my way
Dream about the competitions to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the results, I won't have to say

So text me and update for me
Transfers on fantasy football wait for me
Add up my scores like before I go
Cause I'm leavin' on a Jimmy plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh Fightbeat, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you

But, I'm leavin' on a Jimmy plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh Fightbeat, I hate to go
