Everton are conducting an investigation on what went down in Lille. First some Everton fans were attacked by and unprovoked group of hooded thugs in a pub. (Not much you can do about that.) The same thing happened to Spurs fans in France. I forgot where they were, it may have also been Lille.

Next according to all there, Everton had around 12,000-15,000 fans in Lille (obviously not all with match tickets) and they held and Everton rally in the town centre. French police arrived and tear gassed and hit Everton fans with clubs, dispersing the crowd for no reason.

I guess the number of fans was more like 5,000 Everton fans. They listed a higher number on another report.
