not when you follow this match with matches against the Hamilton Accies and Ross Countys of the world for a while until the next time you face a real side in Europe again

Either Celtic gets smaller and smaller or some revolutionary new league is formed which includes us

That's the only choices that seem at all realistic to me... Either we move down closer to the level of the rest of the SPL or we're saved by a major sea change

It's a fair point Whiskey makes. How would you guys feel if a wealthy Russian oligarch took over Celtic, Newcastle or Everton and suddenly you guys started winning important silverware. Would you enjoy it? Or would it feel hollow?

They kicked off at 6pm. I bet on 8:05pm games. I don't like betting on games with an earlier kick-off to the rest. I see gladbach won and my bet looks doomed now.

    It wouldn't be any different.

Everton crowds do sing for big games but most of it comes from Gwladys St. which is quite away from the away section. When we play smaller clubs(not talking about Celtic) at home, the crowd is dreadfully quiet. They don't react to anything the away crowd does either. It's very strange. Another thing is, the cameras must be in abnormal places at Goodison. Every single time you see the away team taking a corner on TV you can hear scousers cursing away clearly on TV.

We made one hell of a racket when I traveled last to Goodison Park. Lost my voice that day. Wonderful stuff.

Everton had clinched the group already. It's not that they had nothing to play for but they... well, call it what you want. They had nothing to gain or lose.

In the April, '13 game that you were SUPPOSED TO GO TO, the QPR section was pretty loud, especially considering you were already doomed. I sat right by the away section that day. They seemed to sing a lot of songs about the Everton fans not singing. No one really batted an eye. Toward the end after hearing them all game, the Everton fans did the "Going down, going down, going down" chant. Other than that Everton never sang back. Same thing with Swansea ten months ago. Their fans just sang and sang. Tried to get us going by singing songs praising Liverpool. Nothing in return. Just won the game and walked out. The home crowd was loud when we played Villa, Man U, and Chelsea. I don't know. I guess they have a code of which clubs they'll sing against. I love Goodison park but I'll take an away match any day. Everybody in our stands getting drunk and acting wild. That's more fun.

It would be impossible for it to be done with BVB due to the laws governing club football in Germany.

Assuming that wasn't the case I still wouldn't be pleased with it. It would be one thing if a private wealthy individual or company purchased the club and gave an injection of cash and perhaps a better financial outlook. It would be quite another if some oligarch took it over as a vanity project and started spending obscene amounts of money on transfers out of his own pocket. All in all what I'd hope most is that my club could hold on to the players they developed or found a bargain on because of good scouting. I'm so sick of clubs getting their talent raided and having to almost start over after every transfer window.

Just the other day I was reading about the Liverpool-Basel match and the article mentioned being surprised that one of the Basel players is still there. This is not a second division team in Estonia, it's a side that's reached the quarter finals of the Champions League! Doesn't matter though, he's really good so he should be playing at a "bigger" club. It's hard enough for clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal to hold on to players, what hope does that give the likes of Basel?

For the foreseeable future 3/4 of the teams in the CL semifinals will involve Chelski, Oilchester, Real Madrid, PSG, Barca or Bayern. Teams like AM and BVB will still make it through from time to time but in the following summer their best players will be purchased putting and end to their audacity.

Great post, I couldn't add anything further to it if I'm honest, sums it up perfectly. The truth is, everybody who grew up with football in the 90's etc knows exactly where the likes of Chelsea would be without the cash injection, they could very well be in the Championship or League 1, in the same situation as Leeds (who have a far more sustainable fan base). It just doesn't feel like football to me anymore, everything is defined by wealth.

Yeah, I hate that when you've got a real talented player at a club/your club and someone says ''he'll be off to a bigger club soon''. Fuck that shit. You want to keep hold of your best players.

Scott Sinclair was arguably Swansea's best player for a couple of seasons leading up to his transfer to Man Citeh. He shone for Swansea in their promotional season to the premier league and their first season in the top flight. He didn't see out his contract with Swansea and signed with Citeh for four years. He was only used sporadically and most of his appearances came off the bench. Bigger clubs throw away money thus potentially ruining a players career. Basically buying another clubs best player just for the sake of it.

Yep, simply because they can afford to. What's even worse is situations when a player is purchased with the main reason of taking them away from somebody else. This can be either the current club, or a rival that shows interest.

Even if the purchasing club doesn't completely believe the potential is there, it's better for them to have that player sit on the bench and stagnate than be an effective tool in a competitor's camp. Disgusting.

I realize injuries are part of the game and the teams can play so many competitions that reinforcements and depth are needed to maintain consistency. There still needs to be limits to how many players a club can own and loan out. For even "medium" sized clubs every transfer (arriving or departing) can be vital. For the wealthy clubs it's just another game within the game and their main worry is how smart or greedy a player's agent might be.

Hollow. I want the club owned by the fans personally & our sponsorship given over to charities like Barca did. That'd be real winning.

Can't fucking believe I'm about to say this but BRAVO Russel Brand for his clinical dressing down of Nigel Farage on question time last night. Pretty much spot on.

I am no fan of Farage or UKIP but from the clip I saw he had the upper hand I felt. Brand came across as a bit of an empty vessel. The guy from LBC Radio did a much better job of dressing down Farage.
