Well, let's take Wilder as an example. We know he can bang and Wlad has a dodgy chin, so it's possible Wilder could KO him but Wilder is no great fighter. Wilder wouldn't be able to hang with the greats of years gone by.

But...he'd be beating a guy on a 10 year unbeaten streak. To be a great HW all you need is a big right hand and some size. It's all Max Baer had.

Douglas was no scrub...he displayed skill and talent on the night he beat Tyson.

I didn't say Baer was a bum, but he wasn't a great heavyweight. He was good, a very heavy puncher, and a one-time heavyweight champion who never got over what happened to Frankie Campbell. He battered one of the worst heavyweight champions in history to win the title and then lost by failing to train properly. Baer was squandered potential, having been turned away from the army due to what were considered freakish measurements. He had the potential to be great, but he never actualized it.

What if a guy is losing a fight to Wlad then lands a fight ending, lucky shot? Would we class that guy as "great" or just "lucky"?

Yeah, Wlad is lucky. Such poor opposition he's faced overall.

Has there ever been a guy with a 10 year winning streak whose losses were remembered so fondly, and for whom, any potential loss would bestow no greatness on his victor :dunno:

I don't like Wlad but I think any fighter from the new generation who wants to be considered great has to beat him. It really annoys me when up and coming heavyweights talk about Wlad having "a few years left" or "waiting till he vacates the throne", it's fucking bullshit.

Has there ever been a case whereby a guy was undefeated for 10 years and yet to beat him would not result in instant greatness.....or at least some greatness......:dunno:

Word has it that Bryant Jennings is up next.

I can picture the scene, Bryant Jennings knocks out the champ and the place remains totally calm...with Bryant returning meekly to his dressing room, musing the tedium of his day-job.

Was Bomber Hurricane Strong Winds Carter a "Great"............was Joe Choynksi a great.....was Kirkland Laing a great...was Max Schemlling a great....

Anyways this is all very distracting.

Are we in agreement then....the next person to KO Wlad will be just a ho-hum Champ...no noise...:dunno:

The fighter's career in addition to his victory over wald pussy would determine that

Buster Douglas's career outside of the Tyson fight shows him to be a mediocre fighter

And there's the flipside to all of this, you are forgetting... Rubin Carter stopped Emile Griffith, it's true, and Carter was basically little more than a hard-punching contender otherwise, as his career clearly illustrates... The reason nobody says "Emile Griffith was a chinny bitch" is because nobody else did it (he was stopped on his feet against Monzon) and he didn't have to adopt an overwhelmingly negative, illegal style in order to prevent it from happening again

wald pussy was stopped by two mediocre fighters and one awful clubfighter... In order to prevent this from happening again, he has developed into one of the most unwatchable elite fighters in history aided by awful officiating and the chickenshit, lazy bums that populate his division... This is why he is disliked far more than his bigger, better brother was
