The Hobbit Rules, Museum Bombs

The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies ruled them all, as expected, with a smashing $90.6 million at the domestic box office since it's opening last Wednesday. For the Friday-Sunday tally the Peter Jackson epic took a franchise low of $56.2, but we have to keep in mind that all the previous Tolkien films opened on a Friday. If 'The Hobbit' finale holds well for the rest of the following weeks (as it is doing overseas) it could finish its run with $1 billion in revenue.

Bombing miserably in the second spot, Night at The Museum: Secret of The Tomb took an abysmal $17.1 million which is waaaayyy lower than the last film in the franchise opening numbers ($56.2 million). Trying to square off with "the Hobbit' was a dumb move from its studio.

In the third spot the widely regarded 'black Annie' took a decent, but unspectacular $15.8 million. This comes as a minor good news for Sony Pictures (they need a little up in their morale) as Annie was hurt being hacked and released on the internet a few weeks ago. Still this $65 million production was moved from Christmas day to face-off The Hobbit mainly to get it out ASAP and get some cash back before everybody downloads it for free not because it was expected to hurt the Peter Jackson's numbers.

Exodus: Gods & Kings is officially a flop. Plunging a disastrous 66% in its second week with a lame $8.1 million and landing in the fourth place, the Ridley Scott biblical anathema has grossed only $38 million domestically and overseas is not doing that well. Fox film can start writing it off as a loss for its taxes.

and in the fifth spot The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I added $7.8 million for a $289.3 million domestically. It will finish its run with a little over $300 million, a franchise low and even worldwide its numbers are lower than the two prior films.

 

I've got to see the third Hobbit film as soon as. Not surprised the third night at the museum bombed...the first one was good, the second was shiiiiiite.

 

Hopefully that will be the last one.

 

Having a movie with Robin Williams in it go up against The Hobbit was apparently suicide.

The Hobbit film turned to be the best of the trilogy. Enjoyed it immensely.
