Jones fought 4 times in 2011, the year he became champ. He could fight Gus or Rumble next and have time for a rematch with Cormier. I don't really want to see a rematch at this point. Gustafsson is the only man who tested him and gave him a real fight. That't the rematch I've wanted to see ever since their first fight.
The problem is that Anthony Johnson is a damn hard fight for Gus. He could lose that fight and not be back in title contention for better than a year.
Gustafsson got fucked not getting his rematch with Jones. Now he has to fight a really dangerous guy to get another shot. I thought Jones was looking ragged in the 3rd and Cormier was going to take it to him in the 4th and 5th. Then the eye poke and Cormier looked like shit the rest of the fight. Pretty disappointing fight all around. Lots of boring stretches. Excellent win for Jones, though.
two things to take away from this fight. 1. How easily Jones got hit by someone with a 12" reach disadvantage. The striking was pretty much identical. Jones has been getting hit more and more each fight. 2. Unless you have long legs like Gus, it will be hard to take someone down with Jones' leg length. It's hard to trip him up unless you have legs like a damn giraffe
Anthony Johnson is a hard fight for anyone. He can beat anyone at light heavyweight on a good night. I'm picking Gus in that fight but I'm not that confident about it. If Gus wants to be a champion, he has to be willing to take on anyone and everyone and beat them. Like Jones has done through his whole career.
A subtle take down defense technique Jones basically invented is that standing arm crank that fucked up Glover's arm. He did it to Cormier a couple of times when Daniel had an under hook. Jon's height and arm length allows him to intertwine his opponents arm and crank upward. That will make you think twice about a lazy underhook.
Yeah that was big too, but if you look at that back leg whenever DC tried to get that double leg, the back leg was just way out of reach. It's impossible to get the double leg unless he is against the cage. But then, like you said, the arm cranks come into play. Just plain brilliance.
"I dont like DC, I dont respect DC, I hope he's somewhere crying right now, I'm sure he is." Lol. I didn't think they would make up and be friends after the fight.
He is so absolutely afraid of gassing that he doesn't ever press. He should have been able to stop Burkman.
Daniel Cormier TALKED the Talk & Made Every Effort to WALK the Walk...Unfortunately for Him, he Ran into a True BADASS in Jon Jones... 1nce Again, Jones Studied his Opponent's Strengths, ADOPTED Them & BEAT his Foe w/His Own Shit...He OUTCormier'ed Cormier Last Night...Cormier Rocked a "King of the Grind" T-Shirt to the Cage, yet Got OUTGrinded... Jones was STRONGER & More EFFECTIVE in the Clinch, He Took Cormier Down 3-4 Times, Landed Countless Low Kicks, Knees to the Body, Left Elbows to the Grill and Punches...Jones Even Fuuuuurther Illustrated his TOUGHNESS, Eating a Multitude of FLUSH Uppercuts from the Hard Punching Cormier... What this Bout May have Lacked in FLASH or Rewatchability, it More than Made Up for in SUBSTANCE...Along w/the Gustaffson Bout, this is Yet Another Example of Jon Jones WEATHERING the Storm, Fighting THROUGH Adversity & Doing Things Many Thought were Impossible (ie., Outwrestling an Olympian, Eschewing DISTANCE & Instead Looking to Win on the INSIDE), vs. a Guy Quite a Few Tabbed to BEAT Him... Jones is Chewing Up Style After Style...It's Looking More & MORE Likely that he's Simply UNfuckingBEATABLE @ 205... REED:hammert:
Even if Gustaffson LOSES to Rumbe Johnson, Which is HIGHLY Possible, REED Still Thinks Jones OWES Gus a RE, @ Some Point... REED:hammert:
Jones' COMPETITIVE ARROGANCE Leads to This... He's Been Fighting the OTHER Guy's Fight More & MORE, Lately...He Did it w/Texiera & Now Cormier, in Consecutive Fights, Which Resulted in Him Getting Hit MORE than We're Accustomed to Seeing... REED has Little Doubt Jones Could Stick & Move, Relying on Reach & Distance to Win Boring Decisions, if He Wanted To... REED:hammert:
The PRESUMPTION was Cormier would CONTROL the Clinch...w/Jones INITIATING Soooooo Many of Them, Herb Probably Figured he'd Give Cormier a Chance to Utilize his Perceived Strength... REED:hammert:
Not to Mention the "Suck It" Gesture he Gave Cormier, Moments After the Final Horn Sounded... REED:hammert:
I think Cormier needs to win a couple of fights before deserving a rematch. The fight wasn't anywhere near close enough to deserve an immediate rematch. Disappointing night of fights overall. TFK
I agree. My question is what could Cormier change to beat Jones in an immediate rematch? The answer is nothing. He is already a top of the food chain wrestler. He can't gain height or reach. And he can't do much to improve his cardio immediately. So essentially the rematch wouldn't be any different.
Jones is a deranged dude. I honestly think he's fighting inside his own reach to quell the naysayers that either question his chin or think he wins solely because of his size. In either case he's also very proud of his chin and doesn't mind getting tagged. To me that makes him even more difficult to beat.
Agreed. Looked done after 3, was just going through the motions after that. Not really sure why though, as he won round 2 and had a decent round 3. Stamina issue? Frustrated he wasn't able to take Jones down, or hurt him as much as he thought? Slightly disappointed with the fight and with Cormier. Round 1 and 2 were quite interesting, but it was boring after that, and Daniel didn't go for it as much as he should have.
Agreed on all counts. And shit, that is a good point, the eye poke. That fucking changed things. I kept thinking Daniel would pick up steam, and start really taking it to him, but he got poked in the eye, then took a meaty body kick when they resumed, and he just wasn't the same after that. And yeah, pretty disappointing fight, just clinching half the time. But undeniably a great win for Jones.
That's right, and that's because Jones's striking is the most overrated thing about him. He is not a great striker. Gustaffson showed him what a real striker is all about. Sure his striking is "creative" at times, but his striking is just not that fast, or hard, or good. I've always been more impressed with Jones's grappling ability, it's some of the very best in MMA as he showed againsy Cormier, and just his sheer size/range/strength for the weight class, makes him very hard to beat. And he is well rounded. His striking is just about good enough, combined with his massive reach, not to get clowned by anyone standing.
