UFC 183: Diaz vs Silva

I miss the old days of the UFC when there were no rounds and no time limits.

 

Diaz landed some big shots in the first round. I'll have to go back and watch it again.

He won confortably against a shot and uninterested Diaz, but if he ever fights a top 5 mw, i'll bet you a few bucks he gets comprehensively beaten.

 

Silva clearly won but i dont think he felt comfortable fighting at close quarters. it was also weird seeing diaz not only throwing as many kicks as he did but also landing quite a few of them.

 

I think Alves/Mien was the best fight of the night, awesome comeback.

I'm basing it on him being damn near 40, looking like shit in his 2 previous fights, suffering a career threatening injury, and looking like shit against a semi-retired nick diaz

 

I thought tate vs mcmann was the best fight.

 

, she's tough as nails but she's not very talented or skilled. Alves/Mein was much more exciting and was fought at a much higher skill level.

 

YOu're the one rewriting history. In the first fight, he lost the first round comprehensively, and was koed in the 2nd rounds. In the second fight, he was badly hurt everytime Weidman touched him, and looked to be well on his way to get ktfo, before the break. Beating a small, semi-retired, uninterested Nick Diaz in a snoozer/joke of a fight, was not exactly impressive either.

anyway, it's not worth debating further, since I doubt either of us will change his mind on the subject.

Weidman beat the shit out of him. If Silva didn't break his leg Weidman would have ko`ed him regardless. He was dropping/hurting/ko‘ing him at will. Hell Silva was getting ko‘ed twice in one fight. Nothing close in those fights. Silva knows this. Trust me he doesn't want Weidman again.

 

I thought Diaz and Silva both deserved a loss for that joke last night.

That version of Silva last night was a ridiculously slow and timid shell of his former self. He had a slower, smaller and lighter punching opponent constantly pushing him backwards and could not land a single stunning shot.

Meanwhile Diaz was absolutely clueless on how to close the distance and let his hands go. Silva reacted poorly everytime he got touched to the chin but Diaz had zero rhythm. I think it's just another sign of a stagnant camp and no real emphasis on improving in training. Diaz looked completely disinterested.

Personally I think both guys should hang it up. Neither is clearly Top 5 material in their respective weight classes in my opinion. Guys like Rockhold, Machida, Kennedy, Romero, Souza, Belfort and Weidman would have an easy time with THIS Silva.

Meanwhile I think Diaz could manage wins against the fringe guys like Brown, Alves, Maia or Saffedine, but he surely couldn't beat the likes of Hendricks, Lawler, Rory, Lombard or Woodley. On top of that, Diaz doesn't have the drive at this point to win a couple of fights against lower top 10 opposition to work his way to a top 5 bout.

And by the way, Meisha Tate is talented. She over estimated her striking advantage last night and was reckless early. It almost cost her big time. But her scramble to get top position when McMann took her town in the 3rd was a beautiful thing. I personally think Tate is the 2nd best fighter in the division. Unfortunately the gap between 1 and 2 is huge.

Wrong. She's actually one of my favourite female fighters, and I've seen a decent amount of her fights. I like her because of how scrappy she is. But that's just it, all she really has is balls and determination.

She's a true fighter, but she doesn't have anything approaching elite level talent or skill, at all.

She's a good fighter though, her toughness and determination goes a long way. Even in the Cat Zingano fight, my impression was that Zingano was bigger rather than better. I think Tate is the better fighter, she was just undersized against that big lump.

Given the Zingano fight though, I'm not sure you can really consider her the 2nd best fighter in the division. Zingano looks a weight division above, but they are in the same division, and you'd have to think a rematch would be the same.

 

You have seen way too many fights to think someone should retire because of a bad outing. It's fighting. Shit happens.

 

Yeah, I saw that Jesus elaborates more afterward, but I don't care for the 'he should retire card' unless I agree. I look for things like different speech, getting hit easier, physically slower...things that indicate deterioration, not psychological issues that can be fixed. I didn't see this fight, but a safe, boring win doesn't fit into my checklist. Like you point out, that's not even unheard of for Anderson at his probable peak.

 

If you think these chicks aren't tough, consider Meisha Tate continuing to fight with a broken orbital.

I had mine broken by a line drive in middle school and it hurt like a bitch to talk, chew, sneeze, smile, etc. I can't believe fighters keep fighting.
