I rank it much higher, simply on the amazing performances in it, but I can understand where he's coming from. It's a bit of a chore to sit through the whole thing, and is poorly edited on an almost shocking level, considering everything else it brings to the table.

None of the alternatives. He just needs to get an education on classic film appreciation.

Hut's comment shook me to the core. He should be forced to watch every movie that achieves a Pancy rating of 8/10 or better.

    Yeah, that'll show him.

    Life hurts, man

The Deer Hunter is a bit overlong but I think the performances and the depiction of loss (on multiple levels... loss of innocence, loss of life, loss of limb, loss of love, loss of friends etc.) are so harrowing and moving that the film deserves it's high regard...

By all accounts, Cimino was a pretentious, egomaniac shitface and I've heard many describe his rendering of "The Deer Hunter" as a lucky fluke... Whatever the case, it's a hell of a fluke... He smashed it out of the park for this one film

I'd dock a small point for length (The wedding scene is important but it is too long) but the film is a major, substantial work of art, IMO... 9.5/10

Cimino's had a very weird career. "Heavan's Gate" was a famous bust, but not a bad movie, "Year Of The Dragon" is an under-rated pulp classic, "The Sicilian" is one of the worst and most mis-cast "Historical Epic" movies ever made.

I've only seen the "butchered" Heaven's Gate that was cut in half and released in theaters (and it was really, really bad) but I've heard the originally intended 4 hour version is much better than the reputation

Cimino had a chance to revive his career when he got offered the chance to direct Footloose, but he insisted on a lavish budget on a new script.

I suppose he would have had them build a new barn or whatever for Kevin Bacon to do his dance and made everyone learn how to breakdance or something. He was a strange guy who was beyond "meticulous" when it came to making his movies. He was just kind of crazy.

He's also rumored to be transgender.

I heard so too, but I haven't gotten around to sitting thru 4 hours of it.

Maybe I'll see it one hour at a time or something.

And you should be right across the hall, getting an education on modern film rating.

The wedding scene is long, but it adds to the reality of it. It was like a real fucking wedding.
