I follow all the ESPN stuff, when I get the chance, I avidly soak up stories from abroad, including African Football.....see my post on the Equatorial Guinea game, etc etc.

I liked listening to the guy, liked his quirky methodologies and what have you. Very interesting that bit on his picking against Dewey for the Presidency.

I just thought it somewhat fitting that Fightbeats Resident betting whiz was also called Jimmy.

    You sarcastic bastard.

Yeah, he was a street urchin... Old time gambler... People younger than me never heard of the guy but when I was a kid he was one of the most famous people in America... He brought the betting aspect of the NFL mainstream... Irv Cross said the guy was no racist and I believe him, he was just an uneducated street guy trying to express an opinion that was beyond his capabilities to articulate and he did it on MLK day and it just looked awful and the world crashed on his head... Now Al Campanis, THERE was a real racist

The thing of it is, at least three high-profile black athletes have said the same thing he did and paid no price for saying it. I think he was a straight shooter, just as you say he had a street mouth and was way out of touch with the incoming metrosexual yuppies 80's bullshit.

You're talking about a guy who knew mobsters and Dean Martin and that sort of person. His time had come and gone.

He also suffered tremendously with his kids being sick, it reminded me of what happened with George Chuvalo.

I liked listening to him a lot and he had that 70's blazer-and-gold, down to earth style that I am comfortable with. You can practically smell the cologne and tobacco from the photos.

That's something I find about that entire era.....guys were just EASIER to listen to, easier to follow. Nowadays an athlete or a pundit or a TV host....they open their mouth and you just want to hit them.

even Jesse Jackson was prepared to give the guy a break and thought he deserved a second chance but the coverage of it was like a tidal wave and he became persona non grata ... Agree with the punditry comment... Goes to commentators as well... I love watching 70s and 80s ballgames on YouTube ... NBC Game Of The Week with Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola ... They had an easy, conversational tone like a couple of good pals sharing a beer and watching the game... No gimmicks, no sale, just baseball... The game seemed more fun when I was growing up

Cracking busker outside work today - just a guy with a checked shirt and a plastic horse mask dad-dancing on the spot with no music. He's been at it for at least an hour. I gave him a quid.

Should have told him to work harder.

Cameron promises minimum wage of £8 by 2020.

By which stage £8 will be worth less than the £6 you get now.

aye, good old right wing math...

"Congratulations, Bill! We are raising your salary 45 cents per hour!"

"well according to inflation I would need a raise of 60 cents per hour just to match the buying power I had three years ago the last time I got a raise"

    "you're fired"

As John Hartson points out, Liverpool have got some big games coming up. Between FA Cup and Europa League commitments, their next two Premier League games are away at Southampton and Manchester City. How tasty will that Saints game be?

Actually, BBC, the City game is at ANFIELD. We already done played them away from home, losing 3-1, way back in August 2014.

I was just about to post how Rodgers was mad for taking Porridge off and then Balotelli scores.

A lot of people talking shit about how Rodgers needed to get lost, be fired.

Liverpool are a few points off 3rd.

It's too easy sacking a manager, sometimes you just gotta stick with who's in charge at that time...things may just turn around.

At Villa though, things clearly aren't so rosy and jim. How many players did they bring in in 2014-15? Senderos and Cole (who were frees), Richardson, Cissokho and Sanchez (who didn't cost a great amount). Have they got Cleverly on loan? meh. They're where they are because they haven't been willing to spend, spend, spend and it's going to mean relegation for them this season I think.

Must be very difficult being a Villa fan at this moment in time. Harsh to blame Lambert really.

You go back to when Martin O'Neill left them, it has been downhill since. At one point in 2010, they played Liverpool, on a bitterly cold night in either December or very early January, and they really were pushing hard for 4th place but Liverpool beat them with a late Torres winner in the snow.

    Since O'Neill left............down, right down.

He even got them to an FA Cup Semi-Final and I think a league-cup Final.

Over 4 years they have steadily declined.
