Hagler was coming off a brutal KO of John Mugabi and had won 13 or 14 consecutive title defenses...most won by KO.

Leonard was coming off a 5 year absence and making his debut at middleweight.

Floyd is coming off two lackluster performances against Maidana while Pac is coming off a beatdown of a lightweight and Chris Algeri

Like I've said and many others have said, 4 or 5 years ago this would have been a fight to lose your shit over. Not so much today.

Universum is totally gone mate, but if they were around, and Golovkin had the WBO title, he would be making a lot of money over there fighting and destroying these guys that gave Martinez so much trouble.

I was thinking more along the lines of both fighters being on the old side, and the fight being past its sell by date, but OK when you put it like that, maybe it's not the best comparison

Perhaps it's not that comparable, being that Hagler Vs Leonard is one of those odd comeback fights, with one fighter coming out of retirement etc.

It's a good comparison within reason. A big fight that was bigger to Joe Bloggs than it was to seasoned fight fans.

its comparable to Hagler-Leonard in the minds of some. one guy, hagler, was clamoring for the fight for years as pacquiao has allegedly been doing. while the other guy, Leonard, waited until the fight was ripe and hagler had slipped enough to where he was able to win, as some claim mayweather jr has done.

Johnny gonzalez is facing Gary Russell soon. That's a half decent matchup. Wow. That Gary Russell sure looked good when he was fighting nobodies. I think lomancheko was maybe over - doing it though as far as stepping up....so this is a real telling fight.. does Russell have the goods?

no. russell jr is a foot shorter and doesnt have the power to exploit gonzalez's main weakness, his chin.

its a shitty fight and that scumbag haymon fucked me over by using it as leverage to prevent the fight of the year from landing in its logical venue of carson, california. fuck haymon

Yeah, but as I recall it only would have been less to seasoned fight fans because Hagler was P4P #1, bigger, and Leonard hadn't fought much recently. I wasn't into boxing much back then, but I remember it being very big, Sports Illustrated cover big.

We aren't going to come up with a perfect comparison. It has similarities with several BIG fights--Hagler Leonard, Tyson Lewis, Whitaker Chavez, Tyson Holyfield.

Mayweather went to semi retirement when Pacquaio was crushing people and more than willing to fight him. Floyd would come back, hint at leaving again. Put obstacles at fighting Pacquaio whenever they were speculation that the fight was to be made. Now it is happening. Pacquaio and Floyd will have the best paydays of their careers. Floyd thinks Manny slowed and aged enough, especially after the KO loss, that he is willing to sign the contract with the advantages given to him. Manny was always a willing participant to fight other than being thrown off by the request for ped testing, unprecedented at the time.

Floyd is not comfortable with Pacquaio's southpaw stance, his speed and power but believes he'll figure him out after the early rounds. I hope to see a great fight, but still believe his old insecurities about facing Manny will surface...and possibly pull out...

Him going into retirement after DLH was at least as bad. Margarito, Williams, Mosley all near their best, all fights allot of fans would have picked against him in. Instead, fake-retires, comes out of retirement for....Hatton at 147 for some reason. Then fucking Marquez.:wack: God im getting pissed off again just going back over it. War Pacquiao.

He fought him because Hatton was unproven and sucked at 147, plus he brought a huge fan base because of his popularity in England. Margarito, Williams, and Mosley, he would have harder fights. They were bigger men. Floyd would give size and reach. Mosley, he waited for him to be ripe to be beaten.

Always the path with least resistance for Floyd, but we digress...

williams and margarito were never options. mosley was ripe? seemed to me that he lost to cotto around that time. mayweather jr fought him after the most impressive victory of his career over margarito

mosleys thrashing of margarito was the most impressive victory of his career. at the very worst, his second best win behind the first delahoya fight. who dares disagree?

Most impressive victory my arse. Plasterito is a big scrub without his magic wraps.

The first Oscar fight is easily Mosley's best win. He had only just come up from lightweight, was a clear underdog, and beat a prime Oscar 9 rounds to 3. Oscar is 10 times the fighter Plasterito is.

The most impressive performance of his career after he beat Oscar was his distance loss to Miguel Cotto.

Not Only did Margarito suffer the experience of being caught in the act of cheating, but his shoddy training camp, the purpose of the wraps being to make up for same, and Mosleys being informed of same, must be taken into account.

Between the time both men arrived at the venue, and the time both men entered the ring, the dynamic in that fight had shifted entirely. Margarito went in like a man walking to his doom.

That, and of course, Margarito being a really really inferior fighter to begin with :wack:

So inferior that Floyd never had to fight him. :wack:

His late-career stoppage of Margarito and Vargas were good and his beating up of Collazo better than Khan or Hatton managed it was also good.

Not so happy to condemn the man by saying that the best he could manage after Oscar was the beating of a guy who walked into the propeller all night.

They fought nearly a year and half after Mosley's win over Margarito. Look they are where they are with their legacies. Mayweather had the potential to have Jordanesque type respect after all is done. When he talks about being TBE, it is laughable, when we think of the type of FIGHTERs Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali and many others were.

Great FIGHTER yes, with speed and defensive skills off the charts, but safety first. His offense comes from his mouth...

You claimed he made the point in order to praise Floyd preemptively ... That's the bullshit part
