    Agreed

the only thing I liked about it was Samuel L Jackson because he actually made something out of that stupid script

One of the best movies ever made. Our retarded friend probably doesn't like it because it was based on a Satyajit Ray film (one of the best filmmakers/storytellers ever)

One of the essential New York movies and one of the essential films of the 70s (hollywood's greatest decade, to me)

pulp fiction, goodfellas, and taxi driver all very special movies (obviously)

comparing pulp fiction and goodfellas: goodfellas is obviously much better as a traditional story with plot and pacing that will hook in a wide range of people. rags to riches, pride leading to tragic hubris, it's the kind of story that's had broad appeal in Shakespeare's time, in ancient Greece, and every other period in human history. pretty much any male of any age and any background can watch and enjoy goodfellas.

pulp fiction's got all those revolutionary, era-defining, experimental, postmodern features that obviously make it an important piece of art that transcends its genre. so maybe some people like it better for that reason. me personally, when you're considering movies whichi are genuinely great like these, i don't see the point in ranking them.

quentin tarantino has not 'gotten better'. Christ. reservoir dogs and pulp fiction were amazing. Jackie brown was a very good movie. everything else since has been pastiche, he's disappeared up his own postmodern arse and has given up on trying to connect with the reality of human emotional experience anymore.

Good point. Employee probably thinks Adam Sandler is the greatest director ever

Pretty much everyone in cinema knows/knew who Ray was, but afaik Schrader wrote the script at Scorsese's behest.. the general plot was Scorsese's

I don't think so, man. The special features had it that Shrader had written the script pre-Scorsese's Mean Streets success and that Marty had to campaign pretty hard to get the gig. He was fobbed off for a couple of years because he had no track record other than exploitation films.

Are you maybe thinking of Casino? The novel that was 'based on' was actually written after the script and during the filming of the movie. Odd situation.

I must be the only Tarantino fan here. I love Jackie Brown, I'm a big fan of Pam Grier, and the whole film is just very enjoyable and watchable. Forster is great it in too, and I like the 2 cops, Keaton and the other guy.

I also prefer Pulp Fiction to Goodfellas. I loved them both equally as a teenager, but I find Pulp Fiction the more rewatchable of the two. It's just a very fun film, and in its own way, very unique, yes, the silly, day to day, trivial dialogue is a big part of that. Plus the myriad of characters and the seemingly random vigenettes that tie together.

Not a huge fan of Scorsese tbh. I love Taxi Driver, his best film by a country mile, and I really like Goodfellas, but that's about it. Wolf of Wall street is a big smelly cunt of a film, and that shouty man boy DiCaprio is one of the most overrated actors of all time.

Tarantino has not got better at all, his 3 best films are Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill.

Django is awful. What a horrendously bad film. I genuinely can't believe anyone likes this. That and Death Proof are both shit, and the only Tarantino films I've never rewatched, and kind of struggled to get through a bit. Contrived, laborious shit, they seem a bit like someone copying Tarantino, badly.

Inglorious Basterds is good, far better than Django and DP, but not as good as the other 3.

Yeah I do like it actually, and DeNiro has to be my favourite American actor of all time, but it's not the most memorable film for me. I forgot about it tbh, when thinking of Scorsese.

I a more fan of Taratino than Scorcese (and before all you insipient werewolves aim for my juglar, let me clarify that I acknowledge Scorcese as THE superior director, okay?). What most of you guys are missing the point here is in what Pulp Fiction really is and why is ridiculous to compare it with Goodfellas: the title is self explanatory...this is an homage to those vintage pulp crime magazines from the 50's filled with trivial yet entertaining dialogue, brutal violence, unexpected turns in the plot and just colorful unrealistic characters and situations. Goodfellatios is just a drama based on a true story. The only thing both have in common is crime & violence. Comparing these two is like saying 'which one is better "Apollo 13 or 2001: A Space Odyssey" just because, you know, both have astronauts? Apples & Oranges, guys!

    from reservoir dogs:

    MR. PINK
You didn't tell him your name, did
    ya?

    MR. WHITE (OS)
I told him my first name, and
    where I'm from.

    MR. PINK
    Why!

    MR. WHITE (OS)
I told him where I was from a few
days ago. It was just a casual
    conversation.

    MR. PINK
And what was tellin him your name
    when you weren't supposed to?

    MR. WHITE (OS)
    He asked.

Mr. Pink looks at Mr. White like he's retarded.

    MR. WHITE (OS)
We had just gotten away from the
cops. He just got shot. It was
my fuckin fault he got shot. He's
    a fuckin bloody mess - he's
screaming. I swear to god, I
thought we was gonna die right
then and there. I'm tryin to
comfort him, telling him not to
worry, he's gonna be okay, I'm
gonna take care of him. And he
asked me what my name was. I
mean, the man was dyin in my arms.
What the fuck was I supposed to
tell him, "Sorry, I can't give out
    that information, it's against the
    rules. I don't trust you
enough."? Maybe I shoulda, but I
    couldn't.

    MR. PINK
Oh, I don't doubt is was quite
    beautiful--

    MR. WHITE (OS)
    Don't fuckin patronize me.

    ELLE

    THE BRIDE

    it?

    THE BRIDE
    (question)
    Elle?

    ELLE
    (answer)
    Bea.

    THE BRIDE
I was wondering, just 'tween us
girls, what did you say to Pai Mei
for him to snatch out your eye?

    ELLE
    I called him a bastard.

    FLASHBACK - SPAGHETTI WESTERN STYLE

    Oooh, not so good.

The Bride brings her sword back into combat position.

    THE BRIDE
    You're gonna bleed though, you're
    gonna bleed a lot.

and that's about as much dialogue as you get in later tarantino; mostly it's a load of overdone tongue-in-cheek monologues, brad pitt going on about scalps, Robert carradine going on about pai mai's five finger exploding heart technique. reservoir dogs and pulp fiction had heart - the dialogue actually looks like the way that real people speak, and it doesn't exist just to advance the plot - and tarantino managed to balance it with the ironic postmodern vibe.

Casino was based on the real life story of Lefty Rosenthal and Tony "the Ant" Spilotro.. "Taxi Driver" was very obviously a homage to/inspired by Satyajit Ray's "Abhijan." Regardless of whether it was Schrader or Scorsese who was the impetus for it, imo it's hard to watch both films and come away thinking otherwise.

yeah it was a real life story - 'novel' was the wrong term - but the story was brought to Scorsese by Pileggi who was writing a book on the subject and assisted scorsese with the script.

Shrader might well have ripped Taxi driver off but he didnt admit it in his account of writing the script.
