No. The Greeks NOW work the longest hours in Europe.

You are actually pushing an open door with me here.

I am addressing the matter of the Germans being blackmailed into settling Greek debts.

You are addressing the matter of Greek debts.

And the parallels to the conditions being created in southern europe are striking. When the greeks realize that not even electing a far left government can do anything to ameliorate policies being imposed in Frankfurt where do they turn next and how far behind them are Spain?

When the far left Govt is offering them futile, populist gestures like "Lets sue the Fascist Germans HURRAH....and if that don;t work let's cut a deal with the Russkie Devil Hurrah"....then I do wonder about things.

Greece is asking for a Bail-out Bail out for the Bail-out they got bailed out of.

What are they DOING Down there....:dunno:

Nope. They disassembled it and put it back together somewhere outside Berlin. It's currently being used as a brothel.

Exactly same thing Germany was doing under reparations actually - trying to repay a debt while the creditors actively prevented them from earning the income to pay it.

The Greeks have always worked the longest hours in Europe, the Dutch the shortest.

Thats a bit of a big Q. At its root it's more or less an old-style fixed exchange balance of payments crisis brought about by trade imbalances, so 2007 would probably be the wrong place to start. Leaving aside the weird decision to set up the euro in the first, a better place would be with the German decision (& the general movement of wages are more or less 'decided' there in agreements between company reps, unions and government, similar to east asia. 'corporatism' in political science, not pejorative) to repress wages in the early 00s in response to the dotcom crash which it was particularly hard hit by. The effect was to reduce unit labour costs and make Germany more 'competitive' visa vis everyone else - especially EZ countries locked at the same exchange rate - & you see its mammoth trade/current account surplus begin to open up then which by now is unfathomably huge. the corollary effect was also to bring German inflation down below the 2% target agreed upon at Mastrich as a condition of 'harmonizing' the EZ economies to avoid these sort of imbalances.....Greece overshot the target - it fucked up, and in more ways that that - but Germany undershot it by even more and its economy is multiples bigger. IOW the tactic broke the rules, basically.

So the big story in the EZ is one of where the biggest country in a fixed exchange system has pursued an aggressive beggar thy neighbour strategy against its trading 'partners', 19th century style - & Germany is determined to protect its surplus', which is growing year on year - while it demands debt repayments of the same countries its aggressively sucking demand out & with it their ability to earn their way out. It sadist shit, really. Greece has its own problems obviously, by all accounts it should never have even been admitted into the union, tax evasion is rife, etc. But the only solution to the EZ crisis more broadly is for Germany to reinflate its current account surplus away and allow the debtor countries to earn their way out the hole.

Ok so we are in agreement...... The Greek should not have been let in. How do the Krauts let them off the hook without losing face?? And make no mistake, shelling out £200bn on so-called reparations is indeed losing face. £200m of jewels stolen in London the other day....I would not be shocked if this Greek boy was behind it.

I don't know tbh..... i dont even object to the idea, in principle, that reforms have to be forced on the greek government, they clearly seem to be needed. Somebody correctly identifying the root problem in the EZ and talking about it would be an encouraging start tho

You, can be anything you wanna be. Relegated in this case.

Meh, who am I to jibe. Liverpool will prolly lose tonight.

I was SO CLOSE to dumping £140 on QPR at 2-2, when I spoke to you on facebook.

I just KNEW that Bet365 would never let me cash out on it and it turns out to have been the right decision.

I think reforming the Greek political system would be better than taking bazillions off them.

Of course, the Greeks would never stand for it.

Fuck me, Blackburn a massive 5-1 to beat Liverpool. I am getting on that or might cover my arse by going on the 6-5 for a win or draw before 90 mins.
