Typical that he comes into form the minute Liverpool have to play them. Then again Spurs are shite.

This is the sort of syncretism that I love, a quote from Brian Sewell, art collector and critic:

I would like to reduce the human population of the world to one 10th of its present figure. The globe might then recover from the scars we have inflicted on it. If we restrict our breeding, we might have another Eden. I fear, otherwise, we are destined for perdition before the end of the century.

Cars have been a constant passion. One of my deepest regrets is my failure to buy a car made in 1931, the year of my birth, for my 80th birthday. Still, it was the worst of years for cars, in the midst of the Great Depression. A V12 Packard of 1932 should have suited me. A Riley Nine would have been more sensible.

    WELL WELL WELL WELL WELL.

[IMG]A regular guest on BBC News programmes, he declared on Newsnight in 2013: ‘I consider myself a feminist.’ He once wrote on Twitter: ‘You don’t need to be a woman to stand for women’s rights.’He often throws his weight <g class="gr_ gr_598 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_hide Grammar" id="598" data-gr-id="598">behind</g> gender issues such as the campaign against female genital mutilation and paints himself as a role model for young Muslim men at risk of radicalisation.
But Abdul Malik, the club’s owner, said he wanted the video to be seen by the public because of the way Nawaz portrays himself as a feminist and a family man. ‘He’s always talking about religion on TV and I thought, what a hypocrite,’ he said.
    He claimed ‘arrogant’ Nawaz acts <g class="gr_ gr_597 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_hide Grammar" id="597" data-gr-id="597">like</g> a ‘spokesman for Islam’ <g class="gr_ gr_599 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_gramm Punctuation replaceWithoutSep" id="599" data-gr-id="599"></g> but visited the club during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Did you know....Henry Ford created a town outside Detroit in the style of towns of his youth; he bought the childhood homes of his favourite inventors and rebuilt them brick by brick on site. No cars allowed. Kinda like disneyland main street, before disney land. He regretted what he'd done to the American landscape so much he spent most the last years of his life (from the late 30s to late 40s) there.

Yeah, of course, we all do that. For him Utopia was no cars. For me, Utopia is a big wide street with sweet shops and family butchers and family drapers and big Studebakers and Fords, just a few, but just enough................and simpler times.

In a 1000 years now, our current World will be regarded as some sort of Utopia....

I wouldnt be so relativistic. Humans are basically the same as mooses or grasshoppers or barbary monkeys - some environments are much more agreeable than others. If a zoo put a barbary monkey in a habitat as inhospitable as American sprawl is to humans itd be subject to peta bombings

The shit Britain built during that period is obviously infinitely shittier than suburban LA, mind. At least America had the resources and self-belief to commit to sprawl. Lets knock down half of Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow and rehouse the proles in pre-fab semis with 7 foot ceilings. I don't know what Commie Romania was putting up in 1967 but it cant have been materially worse than Knightswood.

The private sector would/could never have done it. Suburbianiziation was massively subsidized/incentivized by the state - just start with the roads (seriously, you wouldnt believe how expensive roads are), power lines, sewer systems etc. In Britain's's case the houses themselves were built by the state; in America it mainly worked through mortgage insurance which guaranteed all suburban developments but was selective for inner city developments, and 'red lined' whole inner city areas completely
