If Mayweather were to beat pacquiao and then accomplish the following, would you call him TBE?

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Apr 25, 2015.

  1. This is very hypothetical, but I'd like to get your opinions so please indulge me ....

Let's say Mayweather beat Pacquiao to get to 48-0, then beat Cotto for a version of the Middleweight Title for his 6th title in as many weight classes to get to 49-0, equalling Marciano's record, and then made the audacious move to unify against GGG and actually managed to beat him via close decision (in a fight that he'd undoubtedly have been the underdog) and then retires at 50-0.

Would he have made a strong case to be called the TBE with these accomplishments?

Floyd will never fight GGG let alone beat him. But yes, completely hypothetically, if he were to beat Pac then beat GGG at 160, he'd finally have a legit TBE argument.

BTW - are you even a boxing fan anymore or just a Floyd fan?

That would be impressive for sure
I think he would beat GGG, GGG is good but people are going too crazy for him so early

GGG would destroy Floyd. It's a physical mismatch.

Floyd just had problems with the pressure and strength of scrubby MAIDANA!

How in the living fuck is he gonna keep off Golov?

I said a few years ago I would probably pick Floyd over Martinez. Martinez was more of a boxer/counterpuncher, and I think it's very likely Floyd could have just outboxed him without getting caught.

Golovkin? No fucking way. He's a beast. He'd chew Floyd up and spit him out in 1 sided fashion. Like Xplosive said, if Floyd struggled with a small, scrubby pressure fighter like Maidana, just imagine him trying to deal with Gaybox.

So with that said, yeah with those 3 wins he'd probably have a pretty good argument.

Maybe so... It's really a silly thing that IMO shows how good Floyd is that people talk about this fight. Different weight classes. That said, I think as strong as GGG is, at THIS point, he's a little green and Floyd would school him

  8. Good question.

Yes I am still a boxing fan. This was just a hypothetical question re floyd just to find out if there's anything he could do that could satisfy his critics.

    Golov GREEN? WTF?

Golov has THE highest offensive skill set in the sport.

This isn't fuckin Canelo in front of Floyd.

He's not green at all, he's an offensive machine, who is very calm and polished, and knows exactly what he's doing.

I think GGG. Is good, but I don't think he is the monster/world beater people think he Is...YET

Golovkin would knock mayweather jr out. I have proposed this scenario to posters here and others. whiskey admitted he would NOT wear a tbe hat even if mayweather jr moved up to defeat golovkin and kovalev

Golovkin is a beast who's 5 years younger and steps into the ring 25 lb heavier than Floyd. Floyd would get flattened.

I think Floyd could beat Golovkin then move straight to heavyweight like Roy and become champion of the heavyweight world by befuddling Klitschko and knocking him out thus becoming the best.

He'd have an argument. But it wouldn't be an ABSOLUTE that he's TBE.

That being said, GGG would destroy Floyd at this point. Maybe he wouldn't stop him. But his size and pressure would be too much. He'd outwork a cautious and defensive Floyd and if Floyd got brave and stood his ground, he'd likely be KO'd.

P4P Floyd is still a greater fighter no matter what. But that's besides the point. At 160 there is just no possible way Floyd is the same guy he was in his prime. He's not even the same guy he was in 2007.

He won't take that risk. He'd likely face Cotto in a rematch due to the special circumstances that make Cotto a "champion" at 160 but he isn't a real middleweight champion. GGG needs to just move up to 168 already. Him waiting for Cotto or Mayweather is even worse than Hopkins waiting on Trinidad and De La Hoya to come to his weight class, when he was a natural supper middleweight the whole time.

That said, Floyd is IMO a top 5 lightweight of all time and you could argue that he's the best guy to have ever competed at 130 pounds.

There aren't a lot of guys I'd pick over the 130-140 lb Floyd. Duran, maybe Whitaker. That's about it. Pryor would've made a very good fight as well. I think he schools Chavez (and no, I don't think Floyd with injured hands & shoulder vs a 155 lb Castillo is any indication that Chavez would do well against him)

  18. This is a tough crowd.

Robinson wins titles at just 2 weights, loses the middleweight championship in fights 3 times, loses to Lamotta, Turpin, Fulmer and Basilio during that time (and 15 other times after) and yet is afforded TBE or GOAT status by most pundits....yet in a hypothetical scenario where a guy retires undefeated at 50-0 having won titles at 130lbs, 135lbs, 140lbs, 147lb, 154lbs and 160lbs having beaten along the way Hernandez, Castillo, Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, Dela Hoya, Alvarez, Pacquiao and Golovkin...he is deemed to not even deserve an argument.

Phew (wipes his sweaty brow) this is a tough crowd.

Chavez would have beaten Floyd at 135. Pryor would've beaten Floyd at 140. Benitez would've beaten Floyd at 140. Whitaker would've beaten Floyd at 135-140.

Mosley would have an excellent chance of beating him at 135.

A Golovkin win would put him pretty high up there.

Not to worry though - ain't gonna happen. Floyd ain't fight GGG. He knows Golov isn't Canelo.

If Golovkin continues to show he's the goods in other fights, I think Floyd would have a pretty legit argument tbh, if he beat Pacquiao and then Golovkin clearly. They'd be the two best fighters of his career by far, and Golovkin especially would also be significantly younger.

Having started your career at 130, then beating a middleweight as beastly as Golovkin would be a phenominal achievement, especially being almost 40 years old.

Like Xplosive said though, he obviously won't fight Gaybox, and if he did, he'd get absolutely battered.

He had more than 4 times as many fights against a higher caliber of opposition ... I love that you throw Alvarez in there like the guy can fight :laugh11:

  23. Absolutely. Any objective observer would have to concede this.

I tend to agree that it wouldn't happen though, that's why I've stressed that it is hypothetical. Even if Floyd were audacious enough to challenge Golovkin, Ellerby, Dad and Uncle Rog would be quick to convince him otherwise.

  24. mexican wedding shirt

Agreed, Sly should really stop dropping Alvarez in there, his arguments would have more credibility

The guy is a fucking fat legged Ginger scrub, he didn't even put up as much of a fight as the lightweight Guerrero.

It really shows how good Floyd is that it takes him fighting a young killer weight classes above him to give anyone a chance lol

Especially Ellerbe, it would destroy him to see little Floydie Woid get abused by Gaybox.

Except in this case, Gaybox would have more than a "chance", he'd be a heavy favourite

Disagree on all counts. Pryor has the best shot of all those guys. Floyd's offense is superior to Pea's, and Chavez would lose a wide decision. Splenda Shane has no chance at all, fight goes the same as when they actually did fight, except possibly even more one-sided. The Benitez that beat Duran.. maybe. Let's not pretend that was the best version of Duran, though.

  29. years from now the names of Cotto, De La Hoya, Pacquiao and Mosley would carry as much weight if not more than Basilio, Fulmer, Olson, Turpin and lamotta. Past fighters fall into legend and folklore over time...hence from a contemporary viewpoint they always seem greater when everythng else is equal. Objectively though....Robinson's best 5 opponents were not, collectively, a higher caliber of fighter than Floyd's best 5 opponents.

Floyd would have always beaten Shane IMO, and I say that as a long time Shane fan. Just too clever and skilled. I also think he'd beat Pea, his offense is a class above, and his defense is also incredible. He'd also have range on Pea.

Duran would abuse him though :kidcool:
