There is nothing so far that suggests GGG beats Hagler, since he hasn't fought anyone as good. However, there is nothing that really suggests Hagler would beat GGG, since GGG has hardly lost even rounds, much less a fight and we don't know what it takes to beat him. So it is a legit question, as is GGG vs Duran.

Since Hagler is the more proven, he is the safe bet against GGG, but one day there will be a middleweight who will unanimously beat Hagler, and he will beat unproven at some point too. Just maybe the guy is GGG, who knows. We know he has the footwork, power, precision and variety of punches to go for it

The logic in here is confusing. Can we say, for instance, that Roberto Duran would beat Danny Garcia?

No way he can handle the man who went toe to toe with Lamont Peterson

Yes, because we have seen such weakness in Garcia that even though he hasn't lost, Duran would take it a step further than the guys who have troubled him. The thing with GGG vs Hagler is, we haven't seen a real weakness in GGG, even though there can be one. Or is there something in particular, IYO, which makes it clear he can't compete with Hagler? Does he get hit too much or rely too much to his power for instance? (I could see these)

Garcia has fought much better fighters than GGG has.

True, and for that reason we know he isn't good enough for Duran. Since GGG hasn't, we don't know much of anything about him either way, which makes discussion about GGG vs Hagler pretty pointless.

Yes, but if you are going to make a postulation about how the fight goes, seems like you'd want to go with the proven legend over the guy who's done nothing but KO a few nobodies.

Hagler would be the default answer and I get that but I agree with Sly and Ugo that it's a bit of a cop out. GGG has fought nobodies but he takes the trash out very well. If he was struggling with the same guys or losing rounds on a consistent basis then it wouldn't really bother me. To just assume that Hagler schools the guy because he fought better opposition, without a breakdown of styles or anything seems silly to me as GGG hasn't shown any significant weaknesses yet. Until he does I don't get how people can have such a definitive opinion on the outcome of the fight.

Based on everything we know to date, you'd surely pick Hagler over Gaybox. However, in a few years Gaybox could be the greatest of all time, we just don't know yet.

Speaking of southpaws, GGG is up against one in Willie Monroe Jr in his next fight.

Good point. That should tell us a whole lot more about how GGG vs Hagler would play out

I don't know about Sr. but his uncle beat Hagler. It's the only loss Hagler has conceded as being legit.

baby jesus....the GGG hype is something else...cocksucker hasn't fought anyone worth a damn.....

  20. Before Tyson fought Berbick, Smith, Thomas, Tucker, Tubbs and Spinks...he hadn't "fought anyone worth a damn" either. Yet, one could see back then that he'd tear up the division. You can evaluate a fighter, even if they haven't fought elite fighters....by looking at the way they consistently perform against the people put in front of them. GGG decimates his opponents one after the other and has been unchallenged. Every fighter has some ability...even if they are not elite level....so to dominate them consistently over a period of time proves worth. Was Joe Louis an unproven bum, just because most of his defenses were against guys of a lower standard than Holmes, Ali, Foreman, Frazier etc?

Nah, close but clear. The KD sealed the deal.

  22. Barkley arguably won 7 rounds of that fight, so KD wouldn't make a difference in the outcome...it would just make it 114-113 instead of 115-113.

Nevertheless, I've never argued that decision. It was a close fight and I have no problem with the outcome. Duran deserved it with the KD.

So if it was 1986 you'd pick Tyson over the likes of Ali, Louis, Foreman because of his impressive victories over Sammy Scaff and David Jaco?

  24. Good post. Intelligent comeback. No I wouldn't have. After the Berbick fight, however, he was in the discussion. Still, to this day, I think Ali and Foreman beat Tyson. Louis-Tyson...you have to favour Tyson IMO.

Yeah i think Ali beats him unless he's having an off night and Tyson is on perfect form. Styles would seem to favor Foreman but to me that's the toughest one to call. I'll also take Tyson over the Brown Bomber.
