In hindsight it was a superfight. And Lewis was offered 40 million for the rematch.

Super fights don't usually involve late replacements.

Lewis vs. Vitaly was NOT a SUPERFIGHT....at the moment or in hindsight...IT WASN'T....it's remembered because Vitaly did better than expected...but still lose.

Lewis probably didn't even make 30 million when he fought TYSON....someone offered him 40 million for VITALY??? lol..is that promoter in the business of losing MONEY??

    I thought Cotto-Margarito 1 and Pacquiao-Marquez 4 exceeded expectations

    Cotto-Margarito 1 wasn't really a superfight per say.

I mean, Cotto wasn't NEARLY as highly regarded as Tito and Marg wasn't nearly as highly regarded as Vargas.

I was actually thinking about this the day before the Floy-Pac fight. I even told a co-worker the fight would likely suck just based on the past history of super fights and especially overdue super fights.

Lewis was considered an alltime great heavyweight champion. According to many he is top ten all time, and even top 5 alltime. Almost all of Lewis' fights were considered superfights back then and Vitaly was one of the top contenders. Lewis vs Vitaly WAS a superfight.

Yes but it wasn't the last great superfight since Lamon Brewster vs Sergei Liakovich happened after that

People spent the whole fight hoping Mayweather would lose. THAT is why the fight was "boring".

Disagree, floyds style is incredibly effective but very boring. He is the Chelsea / Jose Murhino of boxing

I wrote an article a while back, it looked at how some fights become much bigger AFTER they have taken place.

Examples are Gatti vs Ward and Vitali vs Lewis, or Lewis vs Rahman, or Corrales vs Castillo.

They acquire a hype, a buzz, a debate after the fact, not before the fact.

A super-fight acquires the buzz BEFORE the fact, not after it.

Yes, but they also spent the fight knowing he would win, and why. That also comes into it.

I had to rewatch Trinidad-Vargas highlights for about the 1,000th time to try to erase the disappointment and stench of Saturday's fight.

I'll never tire of watching Tito-Vargas. What an amazing fight, a true classic.

There is also an element of drawing in the part time boxing fans. Which means you have to have the big names that have been around a while. De La Hoya-Trinidad was a superfight. It had the big names, the Mexican-PR rivalry, it had all the elements to make Joe Blow who watches boxing twice a year to want to order that fight and have a house party for all his friends that watch boxing even less than him. But for us hardcore boxing fans there was another superfight (for us) around the same time frame. Barrera-Morales I. It didn't have the star power to pull in a portion of the numbers of a big PPV event but for anyone who followed boxing, we knew that would be a barnburner.
