Isn't it kind of cool that a fighter beat the system? We're looking at hundreds of years of prize fighting in some form where pretty much every fighter ever got screwed for everything he had (health, money, dignity) Mayweather gamed the system, stole all the money, and still (so far) has his marbles. Shitty for fans, sure. Bad for the sport long term, absolutely. But considering boxing history, probably justified.
He's like, the least fan friendly mainstream star in boxing history, yet also the richest fighter in boxing history - kind of ironic isn't it? ::
Please....both Floyd n Pac will lose at the end....5-10 years from now BOTH will be broke.....Manny will be alright though....they love him in the filipinos...FLOYD is fuck...and unlikable cunt....
Roy Jones did the same thing. Basically handpicked all his fights..screwed over HBO with a contract that gave him control over choice of opposition, even handpicked his heavyweight opportunity against the right opponent. Jones needed some superstars on his resume to get him to the next level but he seldom took risks.
Have you guys read Larry Holmes biography? If not, you should. Entertaining read. Anyway, this got me thinking about the bullshit Holmes and a bunch of other 80s heavyweights had to deal with. Basically, Don King robbing an entire generation of prize fighters. Fuck it. The guys who don't fight have been stealing the money for a century. At least I'm being robbed by a guy taking punches.
I've...ahem....stolen all of Floyd's fights to date. I'm not endorsing stealing or anything but I'm not gonna put a dime in his pocket.
Fleeced is a strong word. The fight went pretty much the way I expected. Pac would have been more active 5 years ago but I doubt the outcome would have changed.
Further to this in a way I agree. It's hard when you see what boxing has done to fighters. Iran Barkley comes to mind for me. He's now homeless. He was interviewed once and he said something like: "Everything's the same as it was before I started boxing but now the hope is gone." Hard not to feel that statement. In that sense, Floyd getting out with the money and undefeated is a rare and great thing, regardless of what we may think of the man.
You know my thoughts brother Steve Dave , we got a schooling like we should have. And it's very cool, it's not easy to fight that long without a loss!
Gaming the system and not letting "boxing use you" is fine. His bullshit once he became the sport's biggest draw, not doing his part to meet his biggest challenge for years, is another story. The two Sugar Rays did the same thing, but didn't screw the fans like Mayweather did. Leonard fought prime/near prime versions of Benitez, Duran, and Hearns in a 20 month period. That's insane. And even in picking the right time to fight Hagler, he was facing an uphill battle with his inactivity and being the smaller guy. Floyd kept postponing a fight against a smaller guy. At least Leonard gave the fans all of that before he turned into a cherry picker. SRR was a big-time diva and called the shots, but ended up broke anyway.
That's the strangest part. How did Floyd manage to get so big? His style isn't fan friendly. He comes off as an enormous douchebag. He's had run ins with the law. He just seems one of the least likely to be the richest fighter in the world. TFK
Without the De La Hoya fight he wouldn't be nearly as big, directly following up with the Hatton fight brought him recognition from casual fans on this side of the pond too. Of course the talent was always there but things just fell into place for him at the right moments.
I'm sure that Tyson hates Floyd for those reasons. He's the other side of the coin: Lost most of his money, was exciting as hell, took punishment.
Tiger Flowers is delighted for Floyd. Beau Jack is delighted for Floyd. Ike Williams, whose TV was stolen from in front of his head body in his LA Home by burglars, is delighted for Floyd. 3 men who all most likely would have kicked 10 shades of shit out of Floyd.
agREED Manny will be broke but treated well in his country. Much like how Duran lives in Panama. Floyd will be a different case. Vegas won't give a damn about him and I doubt Grand Rapids will pay for his cars. Manny's people love him. Floyd's people love his lifestyle and possessions.
Tyson hates Floyd because Floyd was behind the woman falsely accusing him of rape in 2001. Floyd found out Tyson was banging a girl he thought was his and he got the woman to cry rape. That's why Mike hates Floyd.
It was pretty funny the way Mike called Floyd a "Very small, scared man". Not just small and scared, very small and scared ::
Still don't understand it myself tbh, doesn't make any sense :: We're used to Floyd so we take it granted, but if you think about it what I said is 100% true and therefore completely bizarre.
