Fare thee well, Steve Gerrard - a super servant tae Liverpool but it's time tae depart tae pastures new. No plaudits can be higher than the words o' these three legends...

"Gerrard is for me, in the position he plays, one of the very best in the world. He has a huge impact. For the job he performs, for me, he is one of the greatest."

—Ronaldinho in 2007 with both players named in the FIFA World XI

"Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be. He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that – players like him are just born with that presence."

    —Zinedine Zidane on Gerrard, 2009

"Gerrard was much better than Roy Keane and much more deserving of his Champions League winners medal, like."

—Billy Hunger on on Gerrard versus Keane, 2015

have to say i was never one of Steeeeevie's bigger admirers. All that charging about trying to do dramatic things, raking cross field passes, 30 yard shots, surging runs. About as much heat as light on average. but what i know about fitbaw could basically be written on an underwear label....i probably just didnt like his face or running style something.

Gerrard is a Premier League great and Liverpool great for sure, and in his prime one of my favourite players to watch. Outside of that though he was a very good player, but not a great one. A clear level below the likes of Scholes IMO. He did fuck all for England and as much as the occasional individual error shouldn't define your career as a whole, he made horrible mistakes at the worst possible moments which cost his teams dearly. He had great ones too though and I was gutted he couldn't deliver the big one last season.

I think Billeh needs to watch this. It may purge him of his Royal Disorder.

Thats what Billeh needs. A Royal Purgative.

Agreed, for 2 or 3 seasons around 2005 he was as good as any midfield player in the world, recognized by those in the game.

Better than Scholes? Difficult to say, If LFC had Scholes instead of Gerrard for the last 17 years I don't think we would have been as successful. Unfortunately, due to a lack of quality at times LFC needed that swashbuckling all action type player. Very few guys could have filled that role.

To be fair, England had a golden generation and they all contributed exactly fuck all.

It is no co-incidence that the last time England looked decent in a major tournament was Euro 2004, Scholes' last. He was the only English player who was comfortable in possession and could pull strings.

As fer Gerrard occasionally letting his side doon, one only has tae look at the amoont o' times Roy Keane let himself and his team DOON tae SEE that Gerrard wiz much more reliable. 'Keano' shouldae been horsewhipped fer his international temper tantrum. Gerrard widae seen tae Keane in a fist fight (no ligament snapping kicks alloowed).

That is complete rubbish. If you try to make things happen on the pitch, mistakes will be made. As someone who has followed this guy for 17 years his 'mistakes' are blown way out of proportion by opposition fans.

When you look back at the starting 11, decent is kind to that group of players.

    AgREED.

The sad thing is, in this thread alone, the most ootrageous crititism isnae even from opposition fans... mer from the; 'Whit have Ye done fer me lately' types who depict the modern fitba saepporter. Yet question the antics o' they favourite fitballers and allae sudden a new set o' rules hastae be adhered tae. Not once have Ah seen any sortae objection tae the willy watching antics o' Roy Keane. There wiz a team mate Ye widnae wantae have a shoower wi' fer fear o' yer 'lad' being reported on in his autobiography. Noo, fer big lads like salaco and masen (8 inches on the slack) - noooo problem. But think o' the rest o' the laddies on this thread who suffer from severe shrinky dink in the cold, like.

Since his debut in '98, until his last game fer the club, Gerrard has, erm, bled red.

I say decent in that the team looked decent and could hold their own against the big nations without giving the ball away constantly. That was down to Scholes and it's what we've been missing ever since.

Of course Scholes played a big part but that was a solid team, 1-11.

There must have been a clash of personalities for sure. Players coming in and getting paid more than the players who went up from the Championship. Many players not pulling their weight either. Poor performances, relying on Austin too much to score goals. I hope we keep the likes of Fer and Caulker though. Think they'll be oostanding in the championship.
