The University of Connecticut women's basketball team is like the Real Madrid of women's college basketball ... They've won a fuckload of championships ... They'll get local news coverage when they win the title or obliterate some team 78-21 or whatever but really nobody gives a fuck beyond an enthusiastic but small core audience ... The men's team having a 3-point shooting contest amongst themselves is a bigger story than any women's game

 

Are you saying people can't make up their own minds? All the stats you highlighted from the Guardian were factual with the exception of the "only reason it's not bigger is because of the lack of coverage", which as I said is not the only reason but it is still a pretty damn big one.

 

I have no real interest in the pro or the con of womens football, as a sport, it is manifestly inferior to the "Mens" game {another bone of contention, there is NO MENS GAME....football is open to BOTH GENDERS...."Womens Football" was invented as women had, for over a century, failed to make the grade} Football is a game that is played by its superior exponents regardless of gender.

What does interest me, chronically rather than acutely, is this recent SJW pheomenon of targeting anyone who might not show enough interest or say the right things or feel the right way.

Nobody cares. They should stop telling us that the England Women have "Inspired" a generation or "thrilled the nation". In 10 years when Womens Football is still foundering like the MLS was in the 1970's and 1980's {it eventually went burst} the word on the street will be that the "Phenomenal" opportunity of 2015 was wasted.......and MEN will be fingered {ha ha} as the main culprits.

Ironically, I am saying people CAN, SHOULD and MUST make up their own mind and MUST be FREE to do so, free of the constraints of political correctness and gender "equality".

In order to "show" more womens games..........the broadcasters would have to drop something.

There is NO REASON, NONE....to broadcast ANY game which does not draw a capacity or near-capacity crowd.

There is a REASON why the big broadcasters do not want Aston Villa or Boro or whatever on their schedule.

Those are the shitty games nobody wants. They cost less. There are multiple tiers of games that cost more.

Does that mean there is "Inequality" in the mens game :dunno:

The rights to Villa vs Boro cost more or less than the rights to United vs Citeh :dunno:

And yet, Boro vs Villa might be a better spectacle with more excitement.......but if no column inches were generated, if there was no incident, no real significance to the league, which there usually isn't, nobody would give a damn if it never made it onto the tele, irrespective of its potential to excite or the endeavour of the participants.

I will expand further...consider the disquiet amongst Bradford City fans that their games were not televised by the BBC during their Cup Run ......what they failed to grasp was that the Broadcaster was obliged to choose, sometimes in advance of fixtures being fully formed or announced.

There was no bias on the part of the Broadcasters. They were just caught out. After a while everybody grasped the point.

If that had been women, though, fuck me they would still be on it.

 

Are you aware that this same arugment is made (and has been made for years) about men's soccer in the U.S.

I guess because the national league failed in the 70's they should never bothered trying to get the sport attention again and "fucked off".

 

Crowds can only grow if there is exposure to it though. How can you expect the women's game to grow if nobody sees it apart from a when there's a World Cup on? MMGay was a fringe sport for years until it started being broadcast and now it's a big sport in the USA.

 

Please, compare apples and apples.

Soccer was a venture in the United States which failed not because of some other "Form" of Soccer but rather three, and more, virulent forms of ball-oriented field sports which dominated the cultural and commercial field.

Baseball. Football. Basketball.

The awarding of the World Cup, made known some 8 years or so before the tournament was due to be played there, was of tremendous impetus in relighting the sport in the USA- a fact now born out by the appearance not once but twice of the WOMENS team in the World Cup Final ::

Of course that the man behind all of this is so often vilified and held up as an enemy of the womens game tells you all you need to know about the "talk now think later" mentality of the talking heads that dominate the airwaves.

Secondly, there is the question of demographics. The United States population is now more comprised of Mexicans and other Latins who were already culturally predisposed to the playing of soccer.

Like I said, apples and oranges.

There is no male chauvinist influence holding womens football back. They are not being bullied. Too many people are spending their time and money on too many other things.

But........no TV effort would be justified without a concerted and pre-existing fan base.

I would not say Womens Football is "Forced" on people but the entire discussion around it does seem itself "Forced".

It's like they are so desperate to be liked and desperate to be taken seriously.

Personally, I think they are insecure as fuck, like a lot of chicks in the MMA and boxing, there is a yearning to be taken seriously.
