To REED, there's Very Little Argument AGAINST Tito Trinidad Being an ELITE Fighter...

Yes, he LOST to the Best Guy(s) he Faced, but he was 1 of the 2 BEST Welters of his Era and Came Out w/a (Controversial) Win, Head to Head...NOBODY Questions if DeLa was Elite & Like it or Not, Trinidad Possesses a WIN Over Him...

But BEYOND that, Fernando Vargas and David Reid were the Guys to Beat @ '54 & Tito Wiped his Ass w/BOTH of them...No, Reid WASN'T Elite, but by Virtue of BEATING Ike Quartey (MORE Convincingly than DeLa Did), Vargas Was, in REED's Opinion...

Was Trinidad a Limited, 1 Dimensional, Cinder Block Footed Fighter???...Absolutely...ELITE Fighter???...Absolutely...

His POWER, CONDITIONING and WILL were All Elite Level, Which Made the Sum of Trinidad's Parts ELITE by Proxy...

    Of course he was!
Three division titlist,..an offensive machine who was only bested by other elite fighters of that era.

He was elite. Did he have his flaws??? ABSOLUTELY... But it took a Bernard Hopkins at 160 lbs (A weight that wasn't natural for Tito) to ONE SIDEDLY dominate him and beat him.

No other fighter 154 lbs or below of that particular era could have done that to Tito.

The loss to Winky after the first retirement for me was NOT Tito Trinidad. Even though he looked alright against Mayorga, it was against a smaller guy who was basically a punching bag. Tito was NOT a middleweight.

He was an elite welterweight and light middle AT THE TIME he competed in the divisions. In better eras he would have been a dangerous and very good contender.

    No.

He was world class, and a borderline elite fighter, but not a true elite fighter.

I don't consider he was ever the best in his division, I also don't consider he was ever one of the 10 best fighters in the world.

He got a good win over a fellow borderline elite fighter in Vargas, but against the true elite fighters he faced, his limitations were brutally exposed.

For me, part of being an elite fighter is being good enough to compete with pretty much any other fighter in the world. Tito proved that really wasn't the case, he got clowned by the best fighters he fought.

What's with this North American tradition of asking yourself a question and then answering it...instead of just making the statement? Drives me nuts! lol

Anyway, of course he was an elite fighter. Received his first loss to Bernard Hopkins after part unifying both Welterweight and Jnr. Middleweight divisions and the winning a title at 160lbs. He was the first guy to beat De La Hoya, Reid, Vargas and was a dominant Welterweight titlist. Very few in history could have matched his offensive arsenal. And he's greater than his compatriot Miguel Cotto, I don't care what anyone says.

These are not the punchstats of an elite fighter, shit all his performances against the best fighters of his career are not the marks of an elite fighter.

The guy was a top tier puncher if you just stood in front him, let him set his big floppy legs for a few seconds and tee off, but he was too fucking limited to be a true elite fighter.

I guess Pernell wasn't elite since he looked awful in some fights.

The difference is Pernell looked top tier against some of the best fighters he faced, like Chavez.

It's no coincidence that Tito looked like shit against the best fighters he faced, it's not like he looked bad against some random scrub he underestimated.

Except the 2 aren't comparable at all. Duran is a proven super elite fighter, who beat a peak Sugar Ray Leonard, so really who gives a fuck if he got KO'd by a much bigger fighter post prime, or lost to some scrubs in his 30's.

Tito failed against all the best fighters of his career, that's a fact. Not just failed, but was made to look like a clueless scrub - a plodding left hook on legs.

    agREED...

Both in Terms of SIZE & STYLE, Tommy Hearns was a BAD Matchup for Duran...No Harm, No Foul...But that's NO Different than Winky Wright Being a BAD Matchup for Tito (& Just about Everybody Else he Faced, for that Matter) or Bernard Being a Bit Toooooooo BIG...

The guy also fought roy at like 180 or some shit like that. Tito is a 154 Pounder who's eyes were bigger than his stomach.

    IMO honesty, yes.

I'm a big Tito fan. As he went up he became more of a slugger and less boxer but I always liked his style earlier on.

He is IMO the only one to legitimately beat pea. Whipped almost everyone he fought

If you asked me immediately after the Vargas or Reid fight I would've said, absolutely. Without a doubt. I used to watch Trinidad's fights over and over in awe at the way he froze his opponents with shots - those little cork - screw left hooks he'd land. He'd throw shots that flew around like David's sling. I was amazed by it. Until....

The way he demolished Joppy was more exciting than the borefest 12 rounds beating Hopkins gave Joppy after he was damaged by Tito.

Bernard Hopkins was not considered elite until he beat Trinidad. Do the math.
