Critically acclaimed films that you thought were shit!

Discussion in 'Movies & Televison: Reviews, Discussions & Debate' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Jul 17, 2015.

  1. Are there any films that were praised by critics and generally accepted as classics that you thought were mediocre or terrible?

    Birdman.

Worst movie I've ever seen nominated for Best Picture.

Big Lebowski. Didn't even make it through.

  4. I haven't seen it but I don't doubt you for a second. I was never going to watch that shit.

I don't know about "terrible", but these critically acclaimed movies were overrated, and not just a little.

Titanic: 11 Oscars, over movies like L.A. Confidential and Boogie Nights
Shakespeare in Love: forgettable movie, I barely remember anything about it except that it won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan
Birdman: another bad choice for Best Picture. I give it about a 6/10 or so.
The Man Who Wasn't There: This bored me silly.

Raging Bull and Shawshank redemption are both films i consider really good but really overrated (to the extent they're rated among the very, very best)

Highly rated films i found outright terrible?

I really disliked the matrix. I'd never voluntarily sit through that film.

The second two lotr films are fucking terrible actually. I'll never watch them again.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind was pretty meh.

I agree with Birdman and The Big Lebowski being hyped borefests

I can add the truly forgettable Enemies: A Love Story (1989) which at the time made all the critics picks for Best movie of the year and was showered with all kinds of award nominations. When I rented the film fter 15 minutes my wife walked out of the room and I did the same after gving it another 15 minutes which felt like an eternity.

REDS was nominated for12 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Warren Beatty won as Best Director. It still has a 94% fresh rating on rottentomatoes.
It bored me to death. Most epic piece of shit ever made.

Should I bother to mention that snooze inducing pointless overrated garbage titled Out of Africa?

I have never watched and have no intention to watch that Best Picture winner The Artist which is the lowest grossing best picture winner ever. I wonder why...:boring:

Most of them.....some mention here....but can't think of any right now...most think involving Paltrow.....and Kidman....

Wow, I disagree with everything you wrote. The closest I can come is the fact I never watched the last 2 LOTR films again either. I still think they were good movies though.

And yes Birdman was one of the worst fucking films I've ever been forced to sit through. When you see a lump of shit like that win best picture, you know somebody somewhere got a suitcase full of money.

  21. Anyone who says that any of the LOTR was bad, has mental issues. lol

they're just 90 minute CGI battle scenes. fucking boring. And all the 'I fear a foul wind caryeth east on the wind from Gondor to reach us at the cometh of first light' bullshit becomes unbearable after 15 minutes tops

I quite liked the first one. the start in the hobbit kingdom with hobits doing hobit shit was quite fun, then the wraiths and Lalin's entrance. That all worked. In fact the whole of the first one was pretty good.

The First LOTR was my favorite too. And everyone hated it the most.

2001 Space Odyssey is my pick.

2001 is marred a bit by the extended psychedelic space travel scene which I'm sure was mind-blowing in 1968 but has not aged well... I do love the unsettling terror of the film overall though... The way it's shot, the lighting, the colors... Very eerie film... To me, it's less a great film as it is a great piece of filmmaking if that makes sense

Taxi Driver is a fucking masterpiece

    Titanic was bloated garbage

I enjoyed the LOTR movies ... I wouldn't say they were "great" but I was entertained by them overall and that sort of thing is usually not my cup of tea

Shawshank is a very good movie, it's engrossing and extremely watchable but Hut is CORRECT... It is not a truly great film, in my opinion. There is absolutely zero ambiguity about the characters... Zero ambiguity about the story... You start off wanting Andy to succeed and you never waver from it... You detest Warden Norton immediately and you never waver from it... Great stories always have gray area because life has gray area... There's no gray in Shawshank... I love it, I'd watch it any old time but it is not a great work of art, IMO

American History X is a bad after-school morality tale saved by Edward Norton's brilliant acting... He brings layers out of that character that the writers didn't conceive... The ending is also utterly absurd... without Norton, the film would border on comedy

Raging Bull isn't a favorite of mine either, I find it kind of sluggish... But the cast were great

"Gladiator" was utter shite... Heavy-handed action film with Russel Crowe's intolerable muttering

Cdogg is such movie snob. Gladiator utter shit? GTFOH!

I don't think Gladiator was ever hailed as one of Crowe's best performances anyway. Phoenix, however, was brilliant in Gladiator.

If you wanna make the argument about Gladiator being overrated, fine. But utter shit? Please. At WORST, it's a very good movie.

And I don't give a fuck what you say - Taxi Driver's the most overrated movie in cinematic history.

  28. Word.

Cdogg is an elitist when it comes to films. Gladiator is a great film by any standard.

I can see why people don't like Titanic, but me, I loved it!!! I've watched it at least 5 times. People don't like the love story...and I'm with them on that...but I watch it from the moment the lookout guy says "Iceberg, right ahead". After that point it's pure theater! I love disaster films anyway, so watching that ship sink and everybody die is right up my alley.

Shawshank was great, a film doesn't need ambiguity to be great. Again...cdogg is a madman. lol

American History X! I still haven't recovered from him making the dude bite the curb and then stomping on his head. That put me off the entire film. No joke. Disturbing.

2001: A Space Odyssey First time I watched it, I found it kind of slow, too 'experimental' and way too long, but brilliant at the same time. On second viewing, keeping in mind it was a 1968 film that took three years to complete, I couldn't help, but be in awe. This time I enjoyed it more as the cerebral trip it was. People that love Star Wars and Star Trek will be bored by its lack of action, little dialogue and classical music soundtrack. Kubrick was not aiming to entertain, he wanted us to be intrigued and the film accomplishes that masterfully. It is a timeless film. It is a very influential film. It is a masterpiece.
