MI: Rogue Nation take off to box office heights

Mission Accomplished. Tom Cruise's 5th entry in the MI franchise Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation took off to the top of the box office with an estimated $56 million. This marks the second best opening in the franchise since 2000's MI:2 which opened with $57 million 15 years ago. This also puts Tom Cruise back in the winning track after a string of box office disappointments, but it can be argued that outside this franchise his box office magnet has diminished considerably. Internationally the spy action film grossed $65 million for a global total of $121 million. Many industry pundits are giving optimistic analysis because of the 'revitalized' numbers of this $150 million production, but these same jerks were pessimistic with the almost identical opening of Ant-Man which cost much less than the Tom Cruise film and tagged the Marvel film opening as 'disappointing'. WTF?

Despite the avalanche of bad reviews Vacation managed to open in the distant second spot with $14.8 million, way below the original expectations of $25 million. The remake will be vacating the top ten list in a couple of weeks.

Ant-Man had just a 49% decline in its third week taking $12.6 million in the third spot. The tiny superhero movie has a current domestic total of $132million and $291.6 million globally and is surpassing each of the total grosses of the two Hulk movies. The movie has not opened yet in China & Japan. In those two markets it can make a combined gross of $100 million. So at the end it can finish its worldwide grosses closer to the first Thor totals ($449 million) and not The Incredible Hulk totals of $263 million like the naysayers were predicting.

Minions bested Pixelsthis weekend with $12.2 million. The animated spin-off comedy has a current worldwide total of $854 million and has a good chance to reach the $1 billion mark, which could be a milestone in this franchise.

And how humiliating is that a week old big production be beat by a four weeks old cartoon? because Adam Sandler's Pixels crashed from the second to the fifth spot in just 10 days. It took $10.4 million, decent, but not significant at this point. So far the scifi comedy has grossed only $45 million.

Paper Towns had a disastrous 63% drop this week dropping to the 8th spot with a $4.6 million gross. The teen romance flick has now grossed $23 million and might finish its domestic run around $35 million.

And where is Terminator Genisys? It exited the top ten list after 5 weeks and will finish its domestic run with like $92 million. Hasta la vista, baby! The franchise lowest, but the film can have its 'Salvation' in China & Japan were it can easily take over $100 million. So at the end the joke is on us: this film might finish its worldwide run with close to $500 million! Oh, no! I can almost hear geriatric pops again saying 'I'll be back' :palm:

The new Mission Impossible was a good movie. All of Cruise's movies have been solid since 2003.

Although I wouldn't go nearly as far as calling it boring, I do agree with Muzse that it wasn't as good as Ghost Protocal which admittedly is a tough act to follow. I think maybe it was better than part 3 though but I'm not sure. I'll have to watch it again to know who wins that race. Either way it was another great run for the MI franchise.

What do you think about a Bond/MI movie?

Even though I find it much less appealing, I think the new Bond franchise comes off as more realistic than the MI franchise. Also I like MI just the way it is and I not only have zero interest in merging the two but think it would be distracting and too much to deal with in a two hour or less format.

The new bonds do some crazy shit, but of course, Mission Impossible is more extreme, because of course their missions are impossible

Yeah, it's basically a comedy that takes itself too seriously. And it basically admits that in the film several times.

Horrible idea?? the best freaking director in the world??? :kick: When Bond producer rejected his offer to direct a Bond film, Spielberg moved on and directed that forgettable movie titled Raiders of The Lost Ark .

so what? It's a movie. Movies are not real by definition. The Movie was very enjoyable and the action was great. That is what matters.

I agree, it was enjoyable. But it's not the best spy movie or even close to it.
