Stylewise, Marg was just made for Mosley. Prime Shane ate straight ahead Mexicans for lunch. The Mosley that fought Marg was far removed from his prime, but it was the LAST fight in which he had something left in the tank.

Plus, you have to consider that even though Cotto is heavy handed, he's not particularly fast handed. Marg couldn't deal with Mosley's handspeed moreso than the power.

I think he's rated just about right. He put a great deal of effort into his punches and was rather aggressive, combine that with his prolific hand-speed and his punches hurt, not doubt, but he wasn't an effortless dynamite puncher like a Trinidad for example. I wouldn't say that he was even on De La Hoya's level in that regard.

Mosley in his lightweight prime was one of the most vicious body punchers of our time, which contributed to a lot of his stoppages.

As he got older, he more and more abandoned the body and became more of a headhunter.

Shavers did hit harder than Tyson in terms of pure force.

In terms of speed, arsenal, technique, accuracy, Tyson was a light year ahead of Shavers.

Difficult to imagine that he had hit Holmes harder than Tyson, though

Don't see that efforts got much to do with it....I'd say he was a harder two handed puncher than Oscar

Oscar's left hook was harder than any single punch Mosley threw though. So whether he was a harder "two handed puncher" is irrelevant. Trinidad was a harder "two-handed" puncher than Hearns...but it doesn't matter, hearns right hand is all that matters.

I hear you. Tyson's highlight reel easily trumps Shavers' though. Tyson had guys flying. When power is at that level, it's difficult to say with any certainty who hit harder.

I think he did - difference being Shavers wasn't a finisher.

Tyson was arguably the best finisher in history.

I'd say Oscar's left hook was the best punch either guy had in terms of how he could disguise it etc....but Mosley's right hand was at least as forceful, imo

Holmes himself made a good analogy didn't he - Tyson was like a light sports car crashing into something at 80mph and Shavers was like a mack truck hitting something at 40mph. Something to that effect

There's no fighter in history I hate more than De La Homo, but his left hook was a single more powerful punch than any one Mosley punch.

I disagree and think like D&M says that ODLH's hook was more powerful and that Mosley was just not a very powerful puncher at all. Nearly all Mosley's KO's were the result of accumulated sustained beatings and other than catching Mayorga with a perfect shot there are practically no other instances I can recall of him stopping or even just dropping top guys with single shots. ODLH on the other hand stopped and dropped more than a few guys with his patented hook.

Yeah against the Adrian Stones of the world which really doesn't mean squat. He never really one punched KO'd any top fighters other than Mayorga did he? I'm thinking maybe the Vargas fight too but I can't remember that one. Even still I never found Mosley the kind of guy where you really had to worry about his power. I mean obviously he was a strong puncher who could hurt you if he landed right, but he'd really have to land on you right. With ODLH guys went into his fights wary of his hook.

I tend to disagree. I know there are exceptions, but blasting out low tier guys impressively generally is an excellent indicator of punching power. Blasting out upper tier guys is an indicator of some combination of skill, luck, punching power, timing, etc., especially when there aren't many examples of it.

Holyfield is a perfect example. I don't think he was an especially hard puncher, but he did a lot of things right so he has some highlights that can be referred to supporting a claim of him being a big puncher.

Now the highlighted portion is something I completely disagree with. If anything boxing has shown me is that C-level guys tend to have C-level chins. So A-level guys blasting out B & C level guys really doesn't mean much punching power-wise IMO. For example, I remember Francisco Bojado coming up looking like the second coming of Tito the way he was blasting out C guys left and right. Then he fights his first B guy, hits him with everything but the kitchen sink and doesn't even make a dent. I've seen many examples like that, those lower tiered guys just don't have the same chins as upper level.

Hell Adrien Stone looked like he got shot by a cannon when Mosley dropped him, but Mosley never looked quite that powerful at any other point in his career. So really it didn't mean anything other than Stone was chinny or like you said it was some combination of luck or timing when Mosley caught him.

Not many. I agree it's pretty rare but guys like ODLH, and Tito would at least routeinly one punch drop guys every now and then. With Mosley it was very rare. Like I said nearly all his KO's were of the sustained beating type.

And I agree that he did. I'm not saying he was on the Mayweather feather fist level. Mosley was definitely a hard puncher, but I would not classify him as a powerful puncher or a guy who had concussive power. And to be honest I'm not even saying ODLH was a much stronger puncher then Mosley, just that Oscar's hook was.
