I am intrigued. Looks original and close to the folklore myths of those times.

I think they will blame the psychotic girl for everything and tag her as a witch. Darn, here I am speculating again! :boohoo:

    Whoa!

This film got great reviews with 88% certified fresh at rottentomatoes (audiences apparently are hating it mainly because it was more intense than their average horror film). Most critics agrees on one thing: that this is one of most creepy disturbing movies ever made. Stephen King tweeted that this film scared the hell out of him. A few other critics said is plain satanic. In fact the Satanic Church gave it their approval and are encouraging people to watch it. All that said, I am no longer watching this film. :nono:

  12. Stephen King:

Remember when we were discussing 'The Shining' and you said when you originally went to watch it, there were some teenage girls in the audience laughing at it?

    That'll be this, then.

I'm still not watching this. :eek:hno:

  14. Why not? You think you'll inherit some bad-luck-curse as a result?
What's with all this 'audiences-hating-it-because-it's-intense' shit?
Lame and laughable. People are just more senstive to stuff these days of course...

As I am being surrounded by Millennials and their milli-tard inclusive, sensitive, politically correctness media bombardment more intense than the bombings in Saigon, I stand by my rightful beliefs of being offended that Satanists are supporting this film and the possibility that my sensibilities might get adversely affected if I watch this movie with its intense horror images.

  16. Watched The Witch last night.

It is disturbing, depressing and creepy....but it's not a great movie, really.

Black Phillip was great in it:

Okay I changed my mind and watched this movie online. Very good film. Not that scary, but deeply disturbing, creepy and, yes, satanic. First of all the film has top notch performances by all the actors, in particular Anya Taylor-Joy as Thomasin who is a real revelation here and a face to watch in future films. Heck even the goat Black Phillip delivers a masterful, albeit creepy, performance.

The film doesn't rely on the usual old horror movie tricks of jumping scares editing cuts, music to announce you'll be ready for the next horror sight or excessive use of visuals or special effects. What is horrific about it is the slow descend of the characters into the grips of evil and how it ultimately destroys them.
Why I call this film satanic? because of its portrayal of God and Satan:God either doesn't exist or just decided to abandon these God-fearing family ignoring their prayers and pleas and allowing them to be at Satan's disposal. Because the witch of this film is not your 20th century version of a caricature, a sexy babe with magical powers like Nicole Kidman or your typical modern Wiccan pagan. No. This is the witch people feared 200 years ago: the woods hermit old woman who danced naked on black sabbaths or aquelarres after offering Satan some human sacrifices, had sex with demon goats and then were granted to fly away in their old stick brooms. Most of this you'll see in the film's climax or is inferred. I did had a problem with Thomasin's ultimate fate, though. To me it didn't fit her character to do the things she did at the end, but the final shot of her facial expressions in a mix of joy, guilt, terror and liberation was the most shocking scene in the whole film and haunted me for many nights. 8.5/10

  18. 8.5/10? :scratcher:

It is a very good film. The performances alone are worth watching. Black Phillip deserves a special Academy Award 'Best Performance by a Goat in a horror film'.

  20. The one word that I can use for it is: 'Boring' :dunno:

    8/5? whaaat

it's not even good as a horror :dunno: I watch lots of horrors and this ranks towards the bottom of the list I've seen this year

  24. I don't think it was shit, but Panchy is definately overrating it in the polarizing way as only he can.

  25. Sure. Even if a movie is slow and boring, you can't just turn it off. You have to watch it through in order to give your objective critical PoV.

Reviews and film appreciation are very partial to each individual. You might think 'Memento' is a masterpiece and to me was a borefest. I was initially reluctant to watch this film because of its satanic message, but after watching it I found it was brilliantly written, directed and acted and is head and shoulders better than most of the crap that passes these days as horror films. It is a little gem that will become a horror classic. Mark my words.

I haven't yet see it, but I just KNOW it's good.

  29. Sure I am.
if i watch a movie that starts to drag, I don't just turn it off.

Likewise when I'm on the fence about a movie like Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice...I'll give it further viewings.
Did the same with Spectre. Loved it first time, 2nd and 3rd viewings, not so much...

Panchy, do you have any movies that you can watch over and over? Like, if it comes on TV, you just have to watch it?
    I've got a few of those....should be thread-worthy...
