DLH wanted no part of Tito and Ran from him the rest of his career. Moving up to 160 too soon? He was clearly the second best Middle Weight in the division. There was nothing for him at 154. He would have destroyed Mosley & Forrest
Team Trinidad were DUMB....the same 3 million they made for Joppy or HOpkins fight they could've made fighting more winnable and popular fighters in Forrest and Mosley....I know WINKY WRIGHT was at 154 and Trinidad were smart enough not to fight his boring ass...but they could have easily avoided/duck him...and nobody would bitch other than Winky 2-3 fans...
All good points. I think Canelo is more of a natural fighter than Cotto, but Cotto has better textbook technique. Cotto peaked higher than Canelo has gotten, but, as you state, Canelo is on the way up. Cotto isn't. This is bigger, younger, similar, and rising versus smaller, older, similar, and falling. Cotto probably has enough left to win, but Canelo is the pick and I think he'll win clearly.
I agree with those who have said that Canelo deserves credit for facing the likes of Lara and Trout, who are the type of guys most fighters these days in Canelo's position would have ducked.
Come on, don't act like you didn't follow the sport then. Tito wanted a rematch with Hoya at 154, Oscar wasn't interested. He stayed at 147 and fought Mosley, thinking it would be an easy fight for him. Oscar knew that Tito would have been more comfortable at 154, and he knew that he fought his best in the first fight and STILL tired down the stretch.
Oscar maybe didn't want to get in the ring with him again, but Mosley most certainly would have and had Trinidad stayed, I think Shane moves up to 154 and takes it. I agree Tito destroys both Forrest and Mosley, but I still think at least one of those fights should have been made. Not only were they more winnable fights, but more lucrative than any of the guys at 160. Hopkins and Joppy weren't going anywhere to 168 anytime soon, seeing as there was no big money fight at that weight. I just feel Tito's move up to 160 could have waited. There were other fights to be made.
Canelo isn't more of a natural ANYTHING than Cotto. Cotto is clearly the more naturally talented, naturally skilled of the two. Talent isn't why Canelo will win. Canelo will win cause he's fresher, stronger, and more durable. Plus, I suspect that Canelo WANTS it more. He has yet to have a defining win, whereas Cotto probably considers Martinez his defining win and would be less devastated with a loss. Basically, there's a LOT more on the line here for Canelo, and I think he realizes it. If Cotto loses, it's whatever. People will just say age caught up to him, and that he lost a younger, bigger fighter. He's still going into the HOF, he'll still go down as one of the 10 greatest PR fighters, and he's financially set for life. If Canelo loses, ESPECIALLY if he loses big, people will forever label him as a fighter who just can't cut it against the elite. ALLLLLLL the pressure on this fight is on Canelo ALLLL of it! Cotto can go in there carefree. He's making more money for this fight than Canelo, and a loss can't hurt his legacy - but a win can help it. That's a pretty sweet deal for Miggy. Ginger has EVERYTHING riding on this fight. He better fight like it.
Ehhh, I dunno how true that is. I think Tito got the most outta his talent. He wasn't ALWAYS the come forward plodder Fightbeat likes to paint him as. As a youngster, he was a very good boxer-puncher. Then later in his career, he simply fell in love with his power, as all punchers eventually do. I don't see how a "better" trainer could have helped. Helped against who? Hopkins? You could hire every all time great trainer in history to be in training camp with Tito, and Hop still would have whupped his ass. DLH? DLH's speed and movement would have troubled Tito regardless of his trainer. PLUS, lets be honest, part of Tito's struggle in that fight was the fact that he was dead at 147. Tito would have whupped Oscar's ass at 154, and the Golden Fag knew it. All-in-all, I think Tito got the most outta his talent. But hey, guess we'll never know for sure.
he tried to haggle over a few pounds when a rematch couldve happened. then ended up going up to 154 shortly thereafter
He was more confident in beating Shane than beating Tito in a rematch. Fortunately, that strategy backfired on his cross dressin ass.
And then when he gets to 154 he now wants to fight Tito at that weight, despite Tito already being a middleweight. Tito tells him to move up, to dlh says no, but ends up doing so after Tito retired
Let's not also forget that PRIME Vargas wanted to fight DLH. But Oscar wasn't interested. UNTIL, Tito damn near killed him then Wilfredo Rivera dropped him. Then all of a sudden Oscar fought him.
Agree with this part especially. With regards to Anthony's point about Tito having ambition, there is no denying that. He was one of those fighters who dared to be great, which is something you don't see much of in today's era. I just feel Tito should have bided his time a bit more, and that Mosley fight could have been made and that would have been the real Fight of the Millenium, seeing as Shane would not have run away from Tito. Also agree about the trainer thing. Tito wasn't a bad boxer at all and while he didn't have the IQ of a Leonard or Duran, he wasn't THAT dumb either. He knew hat he had to do against Hopkins, he just wasn't able to do it against a bigger, stronger, smarter, and more skillful fighter. For me, there's no shame.
Not sure how much he made last time, but I imagine it would be pretty hefty, especially if he KNOCKS OUT Canelo, and the pay per view numbers are great. Did he make between 8-10 mill against Floyd last time?
Tito's performance against Winky was despicable and can be attributed to his trainer. He never had his lead foot outside the entire fight. That's unforgivable against a southpaw when what you are doing isn't working.
I think he made 7-8 million flat payment...no ppv cut...if Cotto beat Canelo...and Floyd come plotting for his true final one fight deal final fight...whoever gives him a contract won't be dumb enough to get fooled again by FLOYD....they put 2-3 names he can fight.....he can't make his final fight a rematch against Ortiz...or a fight against the yemen warrior lion prince Amir Khan...or some other garbage ass motherfucker like that...
i dont know what he's getting. what was said by his camp doesnt seem accurate and i have heard alvarez is getting close to 50% not 25%
Not so sure.... Tito was coming off the Mayorga fight, but he was also inactive for 2.5 years prior, and that fight was at 160. Not Tito's best weight, for starters and he was well removed from his prime. Could Winky have done that to the 2000 version of Trinidad? I question it.
I think he beats him also. But I think early on it's competitive. Then Tito finds the range and gives him a bad beating.
