Martinez was very good in his prime, but has gotten overrated and Trinidad has gotten underrated. Regardless, all nonsense aside, I think Tito blasts Sergio after falling behind early. Too accurate with his punches and Martinez is not exactly Wilfred Benitez on defense. Trinidad KO 11
I think 11 rounds is being far too generous to Martinez. Even on his best day at 154, I think Tito gets him out inside of 6-7. Martinez for all his handspeed, wasn't hard to hit. Martinez does well for about 3 rounds, then Tito closes the distance and lands, and it gets pretty brutal for Marvavilla. Prime Vargas stops Martinez at 154, let alone Tito.
1 Thing about Trinidad, he NEVER Lost to a Cat that COULDN'T Play Defense...Martinez was AVERAGE @ Best in that Regard (Considering his Athletic Gifts) & Eventually Gets Taken Out... REED:mj:
At 160 I think Martinez wins a decision in a fight where they trade knockdowns. At 154 I think Trinidad might get a late stoppage after falling behind. Martinez is one of those fighters that gets underrated on fightbeat.
I honestly think he gets more overrated than underrated. However, he was a very good fighter. But he got by mostly on his athleticism and speed. Even at his BEST, he was still a guy who could be hit and his chin was nothing to write home about. I question if Martinez could beat David Reid, and I don't see him beating Fernando Vargas. Now styles do make fights, but I think you need to have a combination of movement, defense, and decent pop to beat a guy like Trinidad. Martinez had movement and some pop, but gets hit too much and I don't see his chin holding up against Trinidad.
For almost 4 years Martinez was universally regarded as a top 5 P4P fighter. It was Floyd, Pac, Ward, Donaire, and Martinez. Some even had him ahead of Donaire and Ward. How is he underrated? Martinez was a good fighter for this era, and I was well documented to be one of his biggest fans on the forum. However, I don't think much of him in a historical sense. His defense was leaky, and his chin, although not weak, wasn't that strong either. Tito would have brutally KO'd him.
