Unnecessary. BLACK should suffice, "Black American" if one needs to distinguish from other blacks.

Because it's a PC term that just means black without any context. Anywhere else in the world a dude from Jamaica would simply (and correctly) be referred to as Jamaican. In the US and A? "African American" :tick:

Her ethnic origin isnt Africa though. I dont see that 'african-american' is really any different to Irish-American or Italian-American or Mexican American or whatever. Ethnic history is always gonna be of interest to people in a country made entirely up of immigrants.

Yes, but "African American" in regards to blacks, tells you nothing of interest. You don't learn anything new; you could look at them as see they are black!

It also doesn't distinguish between those recently emigrating from the African continent from, blacks that go back generations in the US (back to slavery) or Jamaica or some other English Speaking Caribbean country. So it's meaningless.

Black is better...or else specify their actual origins if Black isn't specific enough.

Whites are just called WHITE. You don't hear "European American" or some shit. If they were to say European American then they would be referring to those recently emigrated from Europe.

So....if Whites are WHITE then Blacks are BLACK.

I feel like the term "African American" is a euphemism where a euphemism isn't required. So it's kinda patronizing. Now, I get that it's blacks that originated the word...but they coined it at a time when blacks across the board felt inferior and the word black had extremely negative connotations. Time to move on and discard that silly term.

 

Fair enough. At least nobody's calling bleck people 'negros' anymore, that still seems fucked to me every time I hear it on old TV shows and stuff.

But it's not about ethnic history or having an interest in it, it's used as a term for every single person who happens to be black in America. If a black tourist from Australia was visiting the U.S. they would be referred to as an "African American" by some PC idiot seeing them on the street.
