Would you let your son become a professional boxer?

  1. "Boxing has been good to me, but if I'd known in the beginning what the real odds were, and how tough a business it was going to be, I would never have gone into the ring to make a living"
    - Jerry Quarry.

I know that was then and this is now, but, even for your love of this sport, would you advise or encourage your child to get into and make a living out of boxing?

No way. Unless u r indian and have so many kids that u can afford to spare a couple.

  3. No way? Why not?

  4. Never?

  5. Boxing is unforgiving. Either you're successful...or you get beaten up time and time again and lose brain cells and aesthetic beauty but to no avail. Most boxers are in the second camp.

High probability of injury/death ? I mean why risk it if your kid can study hard and make more money than 95% of the boxers anyway.

  7. I teach my son how to box: I have him skipping, hitting the bag, slipping counterpunching etc. I want him to have the skills in case he needs to defend himself on the street...but i don't want my baby in the ring getting hit in his face just for sport. No way.

  8. True, but you have a vast knowledge of boxing, you're not stupid....maybe you could steer your kid to the all-time heights...

Not worth the risk. I'd do that for buddy's kid though no problem. Make him the next Butterbean.

  10. Oh sure, Buddy's kid - I'd treat it like Herbert Muhammad did with Ali when negotiating millions with Don King for the Holmes fight in 1980:
"His cognitive tests are fine. Get this fat cunt on Thyrolar and Benzadrine - he needs to make the weight, goddammit"

I'll take him to the gym when he's old enough. If he takes to it and likes it and gets decent enough he can fight am. If he wants to turn pro as an adult that would be his decision.

Just how would you deal with the guilt if you pushed him in that direction, and he got brain damage /died.

There's not that much danger in the ams and "letting my son become a pro boxer" is a different question if he's a grown man with boxing experience.

for there to even be the issue of him turning pro he'd have to have been a competent am.

  14. Are you sure about that?

Yep. Amateur boxing is no more dangerous than high school football. I'd be more worried about him playing football to be honest. Most kids don't really care about football or even know how to tackle. They just want to "hit" someone really hard and the more out of position they are to defend themselves the better.

If my kid were fat then sure, I like to see fat people get beat. Otherwise not

  17. Excellent.

That's another vote for Buddy's kids (and Buddy). :bears:

A good gym will turn that euro porker into a killing machine.

It would be mandatory for him to box. Just to ensure he doesn't grow up to be a pussy like the topic starter

He might be some good, too, depending on who his REAL dad was. :atu:

If he had the tools and showed me desire and dedication, yeah why not? I'd rather him give whatever he wanted an honest try and fail, as opposed to him not knowing.

What if he fights Kovalev and has an honest try, a fail, and STILL doesn't know

Well thankfully he's not born yet, so I don't have to worry about Kovalev. Plus, I don't think he'll have the genes to fight at 175 lbs.

More than likely between 135-147 lbs.

    This...

If REED's Son had an Undeniable, Blatantly Obvious APTITUDE for Fighting, it'd Be Foolish NOT to Let him Pursue it to the Fullest Degree...Or to the Ceiling of his OWN Potential, Whichever Comes First...

Just as Everybody CAN'T Be Professional Athletes, Everybody CAN'T Be Doctors, Lawyers, Businessmen, etc., either...If the 1 LEGITIMATE Shot @ "Greatness" or a "Comfortable" Adult Existence was BOXING, REED Would Fully Support his Son's Endeavor...REED Would Be PETRIFIED Every Time he Fought, but he'd Support It, Nonetheless...

Fair Point, but they're EXCEPTIONS, Not the Rule, Bruh...

Would REED "WANT" his Son to Box Professionally???...Of Course Not, but the Question Posed is "Would You LET?"...If Your Son's 1 Shot @ Being "Special" in Life was Thru BOXING, He'd Likely Grow to HATE You, if You BLOCKED His Path...
