Cotto lost the middleweight belt 4 days before losing a UD to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Cotto never denied the fact that he was NOT a middleweight. He lost, but didn't looked washed-up or shot last night. He needs to go back to his natural weight division and grab a belt there. Who he can face? Let's see who are the belt holders there: WBC: vacant belt (Cotto is a pariah now for the Sulaiman mafia, so forget that one) WBA: Floyd Mayweather (retired so the belt goes to interim Erislandy Lara) Cotto should stay away from Lara who can outbox him. IBF: Jermall Charlo (who??) WBO: Liam Smith (who??) Cotto should seek shot at one of these two undefeated dudes who have fought practically nobody of relevance. Liam Smith could be the easier one as apparently doesn't have much power while Charlo does have some dynamite in his punches. Cotto can beat these guys and then go for a unification bout with Lara and win or lose, retire after that last one.
Retirement. Beating a Liam Smith, or Charlo brother should mean nothing for a future HOFmer. Cotto had a great career. He has a contract with Roc Nation, so he is not retiring until he fulfill his contractual commitment. And if he only have a couple of fights left, why fight some bum with no title at stake? He wants to retire with as much cash in the bank as possible, so a title fight next is the logical step and once he wins he belt, he can invite Bradley for a farewell fight which will be very profitable for him than say, retiring right now.
